Lonnie Johnson - Blues By Bonnie Johnson, Prestige Bluesville OBC-502

Lonnie Johnson's thin, aged, wistful voice conveys a sense of profound resilience in the face of ever-present, erosive hardship. His guitar style is electric but old fashioned, more urbane than raw; think of a more relaxed Tiny Grimes (a guitarist who was probably influenced directly by Johnson). As a matter of fact, Johnson is considered by some to be the pioneer of linear, picked, single noted guitar solos as they would manifest in jazz, blues, r&b, and eventually rock. In that sense, his influence was massive. Here he is accompanied by jazz musicians including the excellent saxophonist Hal Singer, as well as Duke Ellington's bassist (for much of the 50s), Wendell Marshall. The material is simple but it's performed exquisitely.

Vinyl: NM. Looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time. The finish is shiny, with no visible defects. Labels are superb, clean and bright without marks. Spindle shows no sign of wear. And no warps.
