1968 UNDERRATED UK PSYCH-POP GEM ALA SGT PEPPER
MANFRED MANN
The Mighty Garvey!
\ Germany - FONTANA - 818 012-1Q
Older vintage exact 2ndpress vinyl in minty top condition ... this issue is pretty scarce having been issued well over 20 years ago of the classic British Pop Psych gem that many collectors seemed to miss along the way ... it is stronger than many similar UK 60's Lp's...
There are not that many British psychedelic albums that are still be waiting to be unearthed -- The Mighty Garvey! is probably Manfred Mann's most obscure album. It never even got an intact release in America -- where U.S.Mercury Records deconstructed and eliminated the jocular unifying faux-concept, and retitled and repackaged it -- and it never charted in England, despite the presence of a number one charting single ("The Mighty Quinn"). The original British version was a lost psychedelic album which, if it wasn't exactly as elaborately conceived or executed as, say, the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band or Magical Mystery Tour, or the Small Faces' Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, still has a lot to recommend it. Coming off of two successive soundtrack projects, the group had a serious backlog of songs and they trotted out the best of them for this release. "Mighty Garvey," incidentally, refers to Eddie "Fingers" Garvey aka Edwin O'Garvey aka Ed Garvey, a nonexistent persona conceived by the band and voiced by Mike d'Abo.
The virtuoso playing of this most talented and sophisticated of all the British Invasion bands is on full display in stereo, in a dazzling array of songs -- pop-psychedelia ("No Better No Worse," "Everyday Another Hair Turns Grey"), British blue-eyed soul ("Each and Every Day"), electric blues ("Big Betty"), pop/rock ("The Mighty Quinn," "Ha Ha Said the Clown"), almost painterly surrealism ("Cubist Town"), British pop-nostalgia ("Harry the One-Man-Band"), folk-based pieces ("Country Dancing"), ethereal sound portraits ("It's So Easy Falling"), and those jocular Eddie Garvey numbers, which run the gamut to and from Sgt. Pepper's-style invocation numbers in this undeservedly overlooked psychedelic gem.
