  MACHITO  ...And His Afro Cubans

  same

Decca DL 5157 scarce '49 10" LP. From discogs:
This is a special edition of 1941, original recordings of Machito and his Afrocubans, later presented as a 78RPM shellac set, Album DECCA A-595. This 33RPM LP press in a beautiful 10" format, with same size and texture of a 78RPM. In fact, it looks exactly in texture and weight of the 78RPM "Shellac" material original released. In fact, this one is stamped in Vinylite, the manufacturing material that replaced the bakelite and Shellac for the 78RPM and that's the reason of the label "UNBREAKABLE" in the cover. Probably one of the first recordings stamped in Vinylite.

Recorded in N.Y.C., 1941, the "SOUVENIR ALBUM" followed Bim Bam Boom, Machito's collaboration with Miguelito Valdes. Machito himself sings this time, in Spanish. Half the songs are rumbas, and the other four are a rumba-Afro, Afro, guaracha, and guajira. The Afro-Cubans feature Mario Bauza and other soloists, but there are no real surprises, no lost gems of Latin jazz. Instead, the high points are Machito's singing, particularly "Sopa de Pichon," and the compositions of Chano Pozo, Obdulio Morales, and others.
Jacket Grade  EX Light wear and age yellowing to cover art. No splits.

Record Grade:  EX Little to no visible play wear. A few tiny surface marks. Nice
