Label/Format: Fontana – Dark blue and silver format, this being a 1970 repress. These have matt and smooth surfaces (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both IMMACULATE: truly this pair practically remind of new. Ultra clean, fresh and attractive with just one ultra tiny and faint spindle trace each side.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 120 grams. A more typical weight for this second, but still early issue.

Brief Info: A late soundtrack album by this popular 1960s band, but surprisingly, this one failed to chart, hence elusive and seldom seen in. An excellent album in age-defying condition. Although never definitive, the labels suggest this has hardly been played and the playing surfaces largely reitterate this still further. The film proved more popular than the album in commercial terms, it featured a young Dennis Waterman (as now regularly seen on ‘New Tricks’), who became a very popular television actor in the UK. The songs are catchy and enjoyable and this could easily be another non-soundtrack Manfred Mann album. I regard this a mini-60s gem, unfairly overlooked and under-appreciated, most fans of the era will love this one and such is the condition of both record and cover, it could prove a substantial upgrade for many collectors. It may not be a first issue, but impressive nontheless.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with full laminate cover. Printed and made in England but uncredited. First issue covers had only front laminate with rear flipbacks.

Laminate – Front & Back: Fresh, shiny with lovely clarity, no lifting and minimal dulling, even viewed under angled light. Any creasing are few and ultra fine edge types, little else and it will prove hard to find better.

Top & Bottom Edges: Barely any wear to either surfaces. The bottom end panel shows very light traces of thickening from storage, even this being somewhat critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly very sharp with any thickening or burr traces light as seen critically viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A lovely clean spine: solid, straight with any compression light. All text perfect and unworn as well as being well centred on quite a narrow surface.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, showing little on white surfaces. The odd small tip crease or two with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A lovely looking fully laminated cover that most collectors will enjoy.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and in terms of real wear, barely any at all. A Polydor inner sleeve with two immaculate window circles with the new less transparent lining. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy that appears very little played, but viewed more critically under bright angled light, very fine and whispy surface marks are seen. Without doubt from dry-cloth cleaning and totally harmless, any more visible surface marks very few and faint and visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lesser-seen Manfred Mann album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds registered little and I enjoyed this one a lot. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. As stated above, both record and cover could prove substantial upgrades for collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
