MANIAC original soundtrack recording, composed by Jay Chattaway
1980 Varese Sarabande STV 81143. An extremely rare mint, still-sealed copy of Jay Chattaway's creepy electronic soundtrack to this notoriously gruesome cult horror flick. This is the original release of one of Chattaway's earliest recordings; he is now best known for his scores to Star Trek: The Next Generation, Voyager (for which he won an Emmy in 2001), Deep Space Nine and Enterprise. There are a ton of YouTube videos of orchestras, flutists, ocarina players, etc. covering his most popular composition, Inner Light, which Captain Picard plays on a flute in the TNG episode of the same name.
This soundtrack is a little different. The movie is about a seriously disturbed, traumatized serial killer who kills and scalps his victims. Even fans say this cult slasher/splatter film is tough to watch, and the music sets you right up. The copy up for auction is, amazingly, in perfect mint condition. The record looks absolutely brand new, with no shelf wear or ring wear of any kind. The vivid, eye-poppingly gruesome cover is perfectly preserved under mint-condition shrink wrap. The shrink is completely intact except for a two very small tears in the upper corners (see detail photos). The record is really incredibly well preserved for a cult horror item from 1980. There is NO sign of any warping. It looks like this LP was just manufactured and arrived home from the store today.
