Hawaii-born Bruno Mars' newest record is a self-acknowledgement of the niche he's filled since the late noughties. His fourth solo album and first proper in nearly a decade, it closes the decade-long gap since 2016's ultra-hit 24K Magic and follows a string of high-profile get-togethers, from Silk Sonic with Anderson Paak to a hit with Lady Gaga. A long production period from 2023-2026 proves again that Mars is an auteur, unhurried by hype cycle pressures; Mars reconnects here with core solo selfhood, riding the apprehensive buzz of his upcoming The Romantic tour, doubling stadium dates to meet global appetite. After years of collaboration and sometimes compromise, this record stakes a relatively personal claim, checking softer instrumentation and finer, more intimate, more humanistic recording.
