IT WAS 1973 IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA....FANIA DOMINATED THE EAST COAST & THE REST OF THE SALSA WORLD!...BUT THIS BAND FROM THE WEST COAST LED BY A CUBAN SONERO MADE 2 OF THE HARDEST TO FIND (OF COURSE NO COMPETITION AGAINST FANIA IN THE AIR WAVES) AND GREATEST SALSA RECORDINGS...PROBABLY, LIKE ME, YOU MISSED IT!

Better known nowadays as Mazacote and currently based in Mission Viejo, the seasoned percussionist/composer/bandleader Orlando López (not to be confused with the eponymous Cuban bass legend), was born in Havana in 1939 and acquired his hand drumming skills at an early age, during his frequent visits in the early 1950s to the home of the Vergaras (the island's preeminent pre-Castro percussion manufacturing dynasty), where he met many Cuban percussive icons, such as Tata Guines and Patato Valdés. 

After paying his dues with various trumpet-led Cuban conjuntos (Gran Habana, Casino Juvenil, Tejedor y Luis, Tropikabana, Orlando Contreras, Musicuba, etc), and the big bands led by Luisito Valdés and Pello el Afrokan, Mazacote escaped from his native land in pursuit of freedom, back in 1964. Since his arrival in the U.S.A., he has performed and/or recorded with innumerable Latin/Caribbean and North American artists, from Willie Bobo, Celia Cruz, René Touzet, Miguelito Valdés and Joe Torres, to Abby Lane, Connie Stevens, and Thelma Houston. 

During the last four decades, Mazacote's L.A.-based bands have accompanied many prominent Latin singers (Vicentico Valdés, Daniel Santos, Cheo Feliciano, Armando Manzanero, Roberto Ledesma, et al), while employing the top vocalists and percussionists in town (Tata Rainos, Rudy Calzado, Perico, Luis Conte, Francisco Aguabella, Rolito Soto, Victor Pantoja, etc), as illustrated in countless (mostly self-produced) Mazacote recordings. 

Here is a HOT salsa release,with arrangements by "El Niño" Jesus Alejandro, who also plays piano, tres and flute on this hard-driving production. In case you forgot, El Niño was, in great part, responsible for the explosive Edwin Bonilla CDs on the SAR label. Not to mention his own Cafecito Cubano (www.lmsrecords.com). Personally, I would get anything that he's is associated with. Produced by Orlando "Mazacote" López, this project features Phil Robinson on vocals, Dervy Rojas and Bobby Rivas on coro. Will not disappoint. Recommended.

Grading Scale used is by Record (LP) Grading and is as followed: A NEW EBAY PROCEDURE REQUEST THE BUYER TO 1st NOTIFY/COMMUNICATE THE SELLER OF A POSSIBLE DISPUTE OVER THE ITEM SOLD!

Vinyl Grading:

Still Sealed (SS):  Sealed at factory and never opened. Disc is assumed to be undamaged and mint, but this cannot be proven until the album is actually opened and the disc examined.

Near Mint (NM):  This is highest grade assigned to opened, handled records. The vinyl is virtually flawless, bright and shiny. A very minor, barely visible scuff or two may be permitted, but no scratches. The disc should play with no audible noise. The label is bright, clean and unmarked.

Very Good Plus Plus (VG++):  Disc plays near perfectly, but may have minor paper scuffs that do not interfere with the sound quality. There can possibly be a hairline scratch or two but nothing that is obvious or affects play. Vinyl is bright and shiny; label is clean and unmarked.

Very Good Plus (VG+):  Some visible surface wear, very minor scratches and scuffs, but minimal impact on the sound quality. Vinyl will still have good luster; labels may have minor imperfections (small labels or initials, etc.) but otherwise clean.

Very Good (VG):  Vinyl will have noticeable scratches or scuffs that cause minor surface noise, but do not overpower the music. There will be no skips. Vinyl may appear somewhat dull and grayish. Labels may have small tears, tape marks, larger writing, etc. but still easily legible. There may be wear or deformation of the spindle hole. It Will Be Sold As Is

Good (G):  Well-played, dull, grayish vinyl with deeper scratches and wear causing distracting surface noise (hisses, pops, cracks and other nasties). The record will still play through without any skips. Labels may be significantly defaced or damaged.

Cover/Picture Sleeve Grading:

Still Sealed (SS):  Album is still in the factory-applied shrink-wrapping.

Mint (M):  Absolutely perfect; no corner dings, marks, tears, dents, impressions from the disc, or other flaws. Cover should appear as if a record has never been inside.

Near Mint (NM):  Very minor signs of wear or cover impressions. Artwork is as close to perfection as possible. If There Are Any Drill Hole, tyny SawCut or Diagonal Cut They Will Be fully Described!

Very Good Plus Plus (VG++):  Minor disc impression or slight corner creases, no wrinkles, puckers, seam splits or writing on the cover. Artwork is clean and unworn and there is no ink wear.

Very Good Plus (VG+):  Cover is clean but may have minor writing or marks and may show slight wear. There may be just the start of ring wear, where the disc has created a raised area on the cover that resulted in the ink wearing off the paper. There may be slight discoloration or staining, minor seam wear, but no splits or tears. Corners may have small creases or fraying.

Very Good (VG):  Covers are worn and used. Seams may be starting to split or may have been unobtrusively repaired with clear tape or clear glue. (There is moderate ringwear, but the artwork is still attractive. There may be yellowing or discoloration and there may be larger writing, labels, or marks. Corners may have damage or creases and there may be scratches or gouges that otherwise damage the artwork.

Good (G):  Several (but not all of the following flaws will apply: Seam splits, large marker writing, major seam splits, significant ring wear, damaged corners, tears, cuts, gouges, masking or duct tape seam repairs, or other flaws and damage. Again, probably only useful to fill a collection niche until something better can be found.
