Mel Carter first hit it big with his 1963 recording "When A Boy Falls In Love" for little Derby Records, and was soon scooped up by Imperial. In 1965 he was in the top ten with a revival of "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" and had several other 45s enter the charts in the mid '60s.
This album finds him back in the fall of 1963, for that first big time in the charts. You have his revival of the Sam Cooke tune "When A Boy Falls In Love" and eleven other songs, on this seldom seen collection from Derby Records.
How many albums were released on the Derby label? Only five. It was a label founded by Sam Cooke and his business partner J. W. Alexander. They ran this as well as Sar Records, and once Cooke was killed in 1964, the labels just withered and disappeared. This was the only pop release as a Derby Lp, all the other four are gospel albums.
