CHEREKA / MEKABERENE LIYEW ... 7-inch, 45rpm single by MENELIK WOSSENACHEW aka WESNATCHEW / WOSSENATCHEW. Original GREEK pressing on the AMHA label (AE 810), from 1973. Outstanding, Ethio jazz funk double-sider by the cult vocalist with arrangements by Girma Beyene and rhythm section by a group most probably featuring Mulatu Astatke on wah wah keyboards. The golden period of early '70s Addis Ababa with a funky afro latin soul / psychedelic jazz sound. Both sides are killer... incredible music, ultra infectious and hypnotic with Menelik riding the funky rhythms with lamenting or softer, near conversational vocals. CHEREKA is a funky, obsessive keyboard groove with jazz horns / bossa motifs and mood changing, tempo changes. The MEKABERENE LIYEW side has a more drifting psych soul sound with groovy congas / funk bass and amazing keyboard solos / breaks and beats. Our copy is the most desirable issue with original picture sleeve showing a cool image of Menelik in the top corner. A Harambee Music Store release with colour splash green vinyl pressed in Greece but common for important Ethiopian releases of the period. Original 4-prong centre intact. A must for the Mulatu / Getachew Kassa & The Shebelles Band / Mahmoud Ahmed / Ethiopiques comp series lover. Superb production sound. Great for DJs. Seldom comes up for sale in top condition. Very rare 45!!!

Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG 

Vinyl is in strong VG++ condition with some hairlines. Superb production sound. A few soft pops to the 'Mekaberene' side. The delicate, thin paper picture sleeve is in VG+ condition with general creasing / dirt marks and some tears from storage. Very rare 45!!!
