Description

MERRUWYN   Live at the Grosvenor  Mega Rare Private FOLK LP Female Vox 1974 UK

on FANFARE FR 2066

Heres another very elusive UK folk  Album   -  MERRUWYN -

LIVE AT THE GROSVENOR  ( Grosvenor House, Sheffield)

Merruwyn were Ann Galvin and Teresa O Brien - from Kent - They both play guitar,

Ann also plays banjo and Teresa , Woodwind Instruments - This is their first album

although they did contribute 3 tracks to the tiny Kent  based  ERON label’s Travelling Folk compilation

The Sleeve notes describe their voices as Bell and Bird - Which is a very apt description-

There is a clip on Youtube  youtube.com/watch?v=k8QM5EJGJ4Y   of one of their self penned tracks from this album .

They remind me of Vashti Bunyan or Mary Hopkin Vocally - And I personally believe this is a remarkably fine album  for such a small pressing -

The  Grosvenor Hotel in Sheffield has now been pulled down- and I suspect unless you actually saw Merruwyn Live

or were lucky enough to know them personally - The chances of finding this album are very slim

CONDITION - Cover is EXCELLENT  with light signs of wear - There are a few light creases and a small mark towards the lower left corner on rear sleeve

This has a  laminated  front sleeve and considering its age its in great shape !

VINYL is VERY GOOD - Visually the disc is close to Excellent with just a few mild surface marks -   audibly there are very light clicks and a few crackles between tracks.

there was one tiny skip for 1 revolution on side on track 2 -and close to the start of side two track 1,

Although when I tried it on another deck with heavier tracking it played through fine.

For a Small label  press it is very well recorded with a lovely bright live  sound

I find  many parts of this recording quite magical with some of the lovliest folk vocals I have heard -

The three original tracks are superb  (The Self Penned tracks on the Eron Compilation are equally fine -

Ann Galvin was clearly a very gifted songwriter)-

Some of these tracks almost sound like out takes from “The Wicker Man “

and it  it does remind me a little of The Focal Point album on Midas (which is again all cover versions)

So there we are - Another  ridiculously rare album that happily has considerable musical merit both in  the choice and performance of the material .

1.Steets of London
