RARE UK first pressing of Michael Gibbs` eponymously-titled debut album "Michael Gibbs" on Deram Records (April 1970).
When Rhodesian-born jazz-rock composer and arranger Michael Gibbs recorded this solo debut, a veritable who`s-who of the UK jazz-rock pantheon were in attendance for the proceedings: Musicians include Kenny Wheeler, Henry Lowther, John Surman, Alan Skidmore, Mike Osborne on brass and reeds, Chris Spedding on guitar, Jack Bruce on bass, as well as John Marshall and Tony Oxley on drums. Arranged and conducted by Michael Gibbs.

Pepper`s Lonely Hearts Club Band had actually existed -- a sprawling, Nehru-jacketed psychedelic orchestra come to life -- their music would have undoubtedly sounded exactly like arranger Michael Gibbs' self-titled Deram LP. Recorded with British crossover titans including guitarist Chris Spedding, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, and electric pianist Gordon Beck, the album was a seminal turning point in the history of U.K. jazz-rock, embracing avant garde-inspired brass passages, electrifying guitar solos and thunderous yet funky rhythms to create music entirely of its time but distinctly out of time as well. And for all its post-Hendrix sound and spirit, Michael Gibbs still retains the soulfulness of conventional jazz; the music speaks to the body as loudly as it does the intellect." EX++ to MINT- COVER with only light general wear. Please see the photos for details.
- Minimal superficial rubbing to front laminate.
- Perfectly legible spine with "pinched" endings, as found only on original first pressings.
- A few tiny creases to the spine, as well as along the top edge.
- Single superficial crease (at opening edge).
- Also includes the original, custom-printed Deram Records inner sleeve, in near-perfect MINT- condition.
- Deram inner sleeve is date-stamped "4-70" (April 1970).
MINT- RECORD, obviously played a very few times only. Practically peerless audio reproduction throughout.
- A few lightest hairlines from sleeve removal, visible only under bright light.
- Perfect UK first pressing Deram Records labels, with no visible spindle wear whatsoever.
- The matrix stamps in the run-out grooves read "ZAL 9577 P-1W" and "ZAL 9578 P-1W", thereby clearly denoting a UK first pressing.
- This record is fully certified to be a very first UK pressing of "Michael Gibbs", issued in April 1970.
...All things considered, I venture the claim that you will not NOT find another copy of "Michael Gibbs" in as perfect a condition as this one in many a month...year?
