MIKE AND KAREN JOHNSON:Happy and Alive (Freedom Light FL 2036/1972?)


Ultra rare and hardly ever offered LP by Christian rock guitarist/vocalist Mike Johnson accompanied by wife Karen. This is far rarer than the LP by his band The Exkursions and his solo albums that followed.

The music is rather eclectic rock with folk, rural and jazz inflections. Johsnon shines on both acoustic and electric guitars. The highlight here is the monster psych track City!, one of the best Christian rock songs ever, with its fast and furious rhythm and ripping fuzz guitar leads climaxing in a multi-tracked jam.

There is also the rather strange ditty I'm High, described by Ken Scott in the Archivist as "performed live with just guitar and slurred vocals that make it sound like he really was high (though it's actually an anti-drug song with references to getting high on Jesus)".
