Rarity: Briefly available on the first black and white label, it sold out almost immediately. A repressing was then made on the coloured virgins format that is much easier to find. Just as important is the pressing quality, this often noisy and cleaner copies are very hard to find, especially with so many quiet passages. This one is very well pressed, has three or four fairly mild clicks but plays impressively without the usual crackle or pressing issues or noises so many include – that on any format it was pressed on. With a superb hardly worn fully laminated cover as well, such copies are actually quite rare to find.

Brief Info: The first album issued on the new Richard Branson label Virgin – it could have hardly got off to a better start with this album taking the nation by storm. It must have surprised Branson and Oldfield themselves, it even gained extra status by the introduction being used in the horror blockbuster movie ‘The Exorcist’. State-of-the-art production and sound quality, but sometimes let down by unwanted sounds on vintage vinyl. Few originals will survive without issues and even from new, ‘perfection’ was far from guaranteed. With its almost instant success, getting units in the shops seemed a priority. This copy – unusually – appears hardly played with two superbly clean playing surfaces. A minute mark has the very brief clicks mentioned above, those apart, this groundbreaking album gives a very impressive account of itself and has a gorgeous fully laminated shiny cover. Not the rarest album I have ever offered, but after hearing many copies I cannot offer due to unwanted sounds, this is quite rare as such and still a magnificent album for a quality hi-fi system workout.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): a fully laminated single format with Island distribution credits and printed and made in England. Includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Superbly shiny and fresh with ultimate clarity and the famous graphic looking fantastic. No lifting, minimal creasing or dulling, this is close to archive quality.

Top Edge: Straight, smooth, unworn.

Bottom Edge: And again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any trace of thickening. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with just one tiny compression trace. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All corners are practically mint with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this classic 1970’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a basic plain white unlined solid inner that has only gently darkened with age. Hardly creased with all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and mostly faint as seen critically under bright light. Just the minute stylus mark with the few brief clicks as mentioned twice already, viewed in average room light, little registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Mike Oldfield masterpiece plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The production and engineering is almost second to none in the rock field, this has been a long-standing audiophile favourite, but finding a copy without often major issues is hard. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, but the odd sporadic tick or crackle trace is nigh-on impossible to avoid, overall this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. The famous keyboard opening with its strange time structure still sends a shiver down the spine, and here plays almost as quiet as its likely to. Any blemishes gentle and light, this pressed on purer vinyl than many. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. I doubt if any copy will ever play ‘silent’, and on that basis, I deem this a near exceptional example, but the odd blemish here-and-there as stated. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, that simply being realistic – at last!, a copy I am happy to offer after hearing far too many that have been rejected and disposed of. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
