Label Condition: Four very clean, fresh and attractive examples from an ultimate first press copy. Another from the one owner from new who at this time put his small ‘P’ initial on this records. This in a consistent tidy, even classy way, here seen above the side numbers to all four labels. Only a tiny few, mostly light spindle marks seen under light.

Brief Artist & Album Info: A stunning double set and arguably as pioneering in the field of modern music as any ever made. It’s influences can still be heard today and this massive set should even appeal to non-jazz fans. A long double set with six, mostly long tracks – awesome sound with a distinctly cutting edge that includes Bennie Maupin’s eerie deep bass clarinet. This is pioneering electric jazz-fusion that almost single handedly invented a few form of music. First heard on the hugely transitional previous album In a Silent Way, this expanded Davis’s new ‘electric sound’ period still further and he found a whole new audience. The backing is of the highest quality imaginable as listed above. A groundbreaking and timeless masterwork from a jazz genius who was never afraid to change style and experiment. An album now getting harder to find as a genuine original, most that surface on the later CBS format labels, this owned from new by just the one owner who cherished his collection.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–), with most of any wear on the bottom edges. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces, this has quite a wide spine. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. Includes the original black and white CBS promotional inner sleeves.

Cover Front: A splendid front with stunning artwork, even this design entered Davis into new realms of excellence for his covers – this was nearly as groundbreaking as the music enclosed. With such strongly coloured artwork and lack of protection this front still looks attractive, many that surface are very tatty, badly aged and worn. Such covers rarely escape often heavy ring wear, especially first issues with much thicker heavier records inside for around 48 years. This front has a trace near the top, and most of any rubbing or blemishes on the very edges and top left corner end. The lack of fading, sticker tears and creasing are all pluses.

Cover Back: Very fine rim rubbing only, and probably as light as its likely to get now. Some tip rubbing again, but this back will never prove easy to find much better

Cover Inner Gatefold: A brilliant picture of Davis, this has little wear inside. A little set-off where the green right ink rest upon the white on the left when closed, this near impossible to avoid and only present near the top.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush, mostly gentle patchy rubbing, most near the right ends which is more moderate.

Bottom Edges: These storage edges have moderate consistent rubbing, this the main reason for the minus to the excellent grading.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both mostly sharp with little wear and minimal traces of thickening or burring, both guaranteed trimmed or enhanced. Records enter on these edges.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite thick and straight with no compression or tilt. Folded square so the edges meet up near perfectly and parallel. Any rubbing tiny and confined to the very ends. One very prone to light fading which this appears to have avoided, all text perfect and unworn as-seen.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: Another gatefold highly prone to wear, seldom seen without often considerable amounts. With most wear on the bottom storage edges, this remains an attractive example with only modest clues of age, but not for the perfectionist, but it should please many collectors and is becoming increasingly hard to find at all as an original.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT: two unlined 1970 era promotional inners with all edges intact and no repairs. Gently darkened by age only with minimal creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or close to. An impressive visual pair that are very clean with lovely shine and quite heavily pressed. Side one has a surface line mark that does nothing, any other surface marks are few and finer as seen under bright light, there are no penetrating stylus scratches. These appear little used, and are seldom seen as such, especially with the prized A1, B1, C1 and D1 matrixes? Visually lovely 48-year-old records that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This groundbreaking music plays even above the high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – a few sporadic, mostly one-off ticks near impossible to avoid on an expansive double set with some very quiet passages in places – most present one the final more delicate track. Overall, a very fine and mostly clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available first issue copies will outperform these significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain these records have been played very lightly. Little or any great note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. Just enough here-and-there to remind of vintage and format, but it will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

End Piece: A contender for the greatest jazz-rock album ever, well possibly? This is my favourite era of Miles Davis work – the modern ‘electric’ period. The previous album In a Silent Way was a prelude to this new sound. This album, and the ones that followed should appeal to fans of rock music equally, not just jazz connoisseurs. This is a work of immense beauty and has a sound and atmosphere that few records could ever match. Dark and brooding, that bass clarinet growls below the surface and when the full band get into gear all hell lets loose. An ear shattering and blistering set that took the jazz world by storm – a massive departure from his early acoustic traditional material. My highest recommendation stands – jazz (and rock) fans, do not lose this monumental first issue classic.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
