Is this the greatest jazz album of all time? Surely only Coltrane's A Love Supreme and Davis's Kind of Blue are serious contenders for this crown. This is a stunning double set and was as pioneering in the field of modern music as any ever made: Its influence can still be heard today.  Though 37 years old, it sounds fresh and ground breaking and this exotic set should even appeal to non-jazz fans.

This double album has only five tracks. Davis plays at times a fragmented trumpet that shreiks and rips through the speaker cone with unusual strength.  This is pioneering electric jazz fusion that almost single handedly invented a few form of music. 

What makes this copy that extra bit special is its a VERY FIRST PRESSING on good solid CBS vinyl.

This ORIGINAL double album is now extraordinarily hard to find, especially in this outstanding condition.  It is much sought and virtually NEVER turns up for sale in such fantastic condition.

The sound, from the first stampers, is astonishingly clean and breathtakingly clear and is near faultless.  Perfect for a top quality deck.  Records this clean and fresh, especially for such a classic set as this, are to be treasured.

CONDITION GUIDE

Cover Grade and Format: Overall, NEAR MINT;  It is the ORIGINAL gatefold sleeve, unlaminated. Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford.  It has been kept in a smoke free environment.  Overall this is a beautiful all round example of this fragile early 70?s cover.  A collector would have to go a long way to find a better one than this. 

Cover Front: A splendid front with stunning artwork, even this design entered Davis into new realms of excellence for his covers - this was nearly as ground breaking as the music enclosed.

With such strongly coloured artwork and, because it is unlaminated, this is prone to wear, grime, rubbing and ringwear.  However this copy has very little of any of that. This is clean, with NO rubbing and NO ringwear.  Double sets with heavy records rarely escape this unsightly form of wear, but this one has.

The only criticism to be made of the front of the cover, is a tiny abrasion where the original price sticker was placed on the top right corner.  It's removal has taken a small portion of print away (approximately 2mm by 15mm - see cover picture)

Cover Back: NEAR MINT and unblemished.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very clean - Almost as new.

Top Edge: Crisp and sharp.

Bottom Edge: Crisp and sharp:  Some very light rubbing, confined just to the edges, where it has been stored upright.  Nothing encroaches the important main faces.

Right Edges/Opening: Clean, sharp with little wear.

Spine and Text: Solid and square with almost NO wear, all text is close to perfect and unworn.  There are 3 or 4 very small creases, approximately 1cm in length.  These barely show to the naked eye.

Corners: All four show a little wear, nothing heavy and most around the tip areas. All retain fine shape.

Label Grade

Label Condition: Four absolutely stunning, virtually MINT 'as new' labels. This astonishing  first press copy has been played only a couple of times by it's owner. There is just the odd faint spindle trace on each label.  Obviously there is no writing or marking on them - Please see label scan for all information needed.

Record Grade

Vinyl Condition - Visual Grading: I have never seen an original pressing better. A superb visual copy.  Barely a mark to be seen, these discs look really lovely. Super clean, shiny, jet black and very heavily pressed.

Side 1 Is bright and shiny.  It retains the "Rainbow Sheen" usually only seen on brand new records.  I would grade this as MINT.

Side 2 Is, like side 1, stunning.  It also retains the "Rainbow Sheen" and again I would grade this as MINT

Side 3 Is in NEAR MINT condition.  It has a couple of small, hairline marks, of no depth and barely visible.

Side 4 Is also in NEAR MINT condition.  It too has a couple of tiny, hairline marks, also barely visible.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: 

The sound quality is astonishing with a massive dynamic range and very full sound and detail. Any surface sounds are minimal. Indeed when I played portions of the album, the sound was near perfect and nothing unwarranted could be heard: Both sound channels are clean and sharp.

Few original copies will play better than this one.

Inner Sleeves. There were no specific inner sleeves for this album, CBS preferring to use their generic company paper sleeves.  The two on this album feature adverts for Tony Bennett albums!  Apart from a little bit of creasing and some slight yellowing (because of age) down one side, they are in EXCELLENT condition

The Players: Miles Davis - trumpet; Wayne Shorter - soprano saxophone; Lenny White - drums; Bennie Maupin - bass clarinet; Chick Corea - electric piano; Jim Riley - percussion; Jack DeJohette - drums; Harvey Brooks - Fender bass; Charles Alias - drums; Dave Holland - bass and John McLaughlin - electric guitar. Larry Young played electric piano as does Joe Zawinul on some tracks.
