Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule, another typical piece from the same owner as the ‘Bitches Brew’ I am currently offering (amongst others). He was a worker in the vinyl pressing factory for a number of years and obtained some lovely early pressings, most of which have hardly been played.

Brief Info: For many, the greatest jazzman ever. Recorded in 1966 by Davis’ second quintet, it is regarded as one of his finest by this line-up and this superb, very heavily pressed early copy does it nigh-on maximum justice. It apparently received rave reviews on issue. Another impressive piece from a fine collection of CBS Mile Davis records with more to follow. Strongly recommended for fans of this legendary jazz trumpeter.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A single format with front laminate. This covers the top and bottom edges, but not the spine, hence the spine is bare and vulnerable. The back is matt and smooth and includes a huge stereo sticker as seen in close-up. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and includes the ‘Patent Pending’ text and original orange promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination & Front: An incredibly bright and vibrant front, the laminate retains strong shine, freshness and clarity. No lifting or peeling, any of the tiny few surface creases are very fine and faint, hardly even showing with normal viewing. Under angled light, gentle rim dull traces but little else. This front has aged little and looks impressive.

Cover Back: The unprotected back has gently aged with some toning around the edges and mild darkening. Enough to politely remind of it’s considerable age and vintage, and personally, I have no issues with that. A fairly mild crease on the bottom left corner but little else. The large stereo sticker is lovely and has clearly never been picked at or removed, just darkened on the edges. No ringwear or rubbing and the one crease apart, it has hardly any others.

Top Edge: Barely any wear and still smooth unscuffed laminate. Any bowling gentle as laminate tightens over time, this is still quite straight.

Bottom Edge: Similar and even straight, the odd tiny surface chip trace only.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. The front edge correctly has the fine non-laminate strip, this mildly darkened a little. Record enters on this edge that has no trimming or enhancements, the back edge a mere fraction longer than the front in manufacture – hardly unusual and totally natural.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with minimal compression. Fragile and exposed, few of these spine types on CBS when unlaminated survive with all text intact. Well this one has – the white card spine surface has darkened, but the text is unworn and that is some achievement being quite fine and thin.

Corners: All retain excellent shape with any tip rubs tiny and light.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this colourful 1960s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. As stated, just enough to remind of the significant age, but many think that actually adds to the real history and feel of 1960s covers. This scarce item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: barely aged, ultra clean and fresh and devoid of creasing and edge splits (with no repairs). Both window circles crisp and minimal traces of any seam adhesive darkening. This famous inner promotes CBS records to 1968, so puts a neat date-time for the record itself. When the record is placed inside, these inners always look so attractive as seen in my pictures – but best store the disc inside the modern lined inner I always supply with my records.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally impressive shine and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces bordering on minuscule as seen critically under bright angled light. There are a very small few, tiny pressing ‘bumps’, again that not unusual, and these have minimal audio affect. The odd couple of three light ticks, but most lost within the dynamic loud music, these ‘natural’ blemishes have nothing whatsoever to do with wear and are of next-to-no-concern, and tracking effortless. Visually a super record that appears hardly even played, it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality jazz-fusion ‘bop’ album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault bar the odd gentle tick as mentioned above. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing in terms of audio quality. Few early examples will outperform this heavyweight pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – it will take an amazing copy to better this. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
