Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with just one or two spindle marks – quite honestly, both look little short of as made. Another piece from the same owner as the ‘Bitches Brew’ I am currently offering (amongst others). He was a worker in the vinyl pressing factory for a number of years and obtained some lovely early pressings, most of which have hardly been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: For many, the greatest jazzman ever. Recorded early in 1968 and historically significant as it began the new phase of his forthcoming ‘Electric’ period, soon to be expanded still further. Now with elements of free-jazz pioneers like Coleman and Coltrane and attracting a new audience. This another copy from the same lot as others I am currently offering, hardly played but this one does have a small pressing spot near the start of side 2 which omits seventeen mostly quite light clicks, but thereafter little else on that side, the odd sporadic tick/crackle trace apart. Under light on side 1, a light pressing ‘dull’, only quite gentle surface sound very briefly heard, little else after especially as the band really kick-in – so this side especially plays for almost all, superbly. So, unlike the others on offer, this one not quite as cleanly pressed, but issues brief (side two, very brief indeed), mostly very light and the album plays for most-all with terrific sound. So this one not quite for the perfectionists, but I would say, it will still take a fairly amazing original to beat it significantly – this is still an impressive record with few reminders of it’s impressive age.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front laminate. This covers all the closed edges including spine, that not always the case, but the best news for resisting wear on this delicate area. The back is matt and smooth and includes a large ‘STEREO’ sticker as seen in close-up. Issued still in the era of the mono record, CBS decided a the stereo version cover was cheaper to produce this way. Printed and made in England by West Brothers and includes the original orange promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains strong shine, freshness and clarity. No lifting or peeling and any of the tiny few creases, fine, light and faint. Under angled light, only the merest gentle hint of any dulling and barely any rim impression, and how many covers of this amazing age will avoid that as a bare minimum?

Cover Back: The unprotected back has hardly aged with hardly any discolouration or toning at all. So little to remind of it’s considerable age and vintage. No ringwear or rubbing and again, barely any creasing – the odd tiny tip crease or two apart. The laminate end on the right edge is neat with barely any traces of grubbiness. Nice to see that huge ‘STEREO’ sticker unpicked and clearly never removed, this just darkened on the very edges.

Top Edge: Minimal wear and mostly very smooth, being very thin, still quite straight as well.

Bottom Edge: Similar again and totally unscuffed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with practically no wear. Any thickening or burring minuscule even as seen viewed end-on. The front edge correctly has the fine non-laminate strip, this devoid of grubbiness and wear. Record enters on this edge that has no trimming or enhancements.

Spine and Text: Solid, mostly very straight with minimal compression. The ends are pinched in manufacture and both remain neat. As stated above, this spine is fully laminated and all FULLY intact and super-smooth with no scuffs or wear. All text pristine but centred a fraction low on a very narrow depth.

Corners: All retain excellent or even better shape with any tip rubs tiny and hardly even worthy of mention.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this magnificent 1960s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This scarce item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and harshly graded as such. Only marked down for darkening of the back seams which, in most cases, is purely natural as the adhesive browns with age. Still clean and the front especially, fresh and any creasing little and light, no edge splits (or repairs). Both window circles crisp and totally undamaged. When the record is placed inside, these inners always look so attractive as seen in my pictures – but best store the disc inside the modern lined inner I always supply with my records.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): and this being very cautious, any blemishes are within the pressing as detailed further up, this record appears hardly even played. Still a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. Light pressing dulling near the rims with one small spot that emits seventeen mostly fairly light clicks. No ‘needle’ marks, and surface marks very light, few and faint. In real terms, this first issue record is little short of as-made – the blemishes natural and present from new. Visually not for the purist, but still a lovely record that (very) arguably, is undergraded, it should please many collectors but not for those wanting visual and audio ‘perfection’.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality jazz-fusion album plays even above it’s high visual for most, but with the brief and mostly light blemishes as already mentioned. Most of my regular customers know I only like to offer (in most-all cases) records that play near perfect or as close to as possible within the format. And when a record has issues, albeit very brief and mostly very light, I will clearly mention them – that is what a real thorough, total play-grade is for. The clicks being the main issue, but not a lot thereafter. The surface sound at the very beginning of side one if very brief indeed and barely moderate, and all is little short of wonderful thereafter. I also remind I play all my records on very sensitive equipment including the Linn LP12 Sondek. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. After initial brief blemishes, little to fault thereafter. The odd tick or polite reminder of the media being played is near impossible to avoid as these albums will have quiet passages and records well into their forties will rarely will play ‘CD-quiet’ in their entirety. Few early examples will outperform this pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, the music fully focused and crisp. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled. So not for the perfectionists or those intolerant of a few clicks, but many will still enjoy this terrific and groundbreaking set – high recommendation for many collectors more than appropriate.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
