The very 1968 FIRST Creedence Clearwater Revival album...BEFORE they became famously trust into mass public adorned stardom.
Make NO mistake, C.C.R. had the "swamp rocker" sound & style, delivering a trademark gritty-biting hard blues-rock edge within outstanding infectious self penned tracks. Upon their arrival, they turned a lot of heads back in '68 with this unique style.
Creedence Clearwater Revival were from Northern California... huh?... most anyone might assume the obvious, in these guys emerging from the swamps in the deep south.

No matter, they out perform anyone for the style as history reflects.

In the late '60s, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL literally burst out on the scene just as they were - loud, gruff, dirty and stinking of swamp mud.

Indeed, few of C.C.R. albums can boast this un-polished production (that's not an accusation). As it is, this record features the legendary talents of JOHN FOGERTYas both songwriter & guitarist.

Side A of this album, with just three extended cuts, is near perfect. The very first cut, the band take on the classic rock-soul classic 'I Put A Spell On You', and immediately it tells you more about the band than you should really know. The terrific instrumental (guitar) passages in the lengthy solo break were apparently very carefully constructed - John really shows himself master of the six string, brilliantly transforming one riff into another and finally bringing the solo section to a terrific rising climax. That's the style he'd been using ever since the groups inception: dedicating himself to a careful analysis of potential instrumental sections on his songs and making them as memorable and 'accessible as possible. If ever there was something revolutionary in C.C.R.'s music making, it was John's approach to his guitar work - as best evidenced on 'I Put A Spell On You' (and reprised on 'Walk On The Water' at the end passage of the record).

Next comes the 'original' - John's 'Working Man', about the hardship of the working class, but never mind the lyrics: here you'll find one gruff and menacing guitar tone! Almost scary good , especially in the way he soars on that first solo break... man, you'll be hard pressed to hear anybody doing the same type of stuff. He really goes to show you that when guitar solos are carefully thought over they can intoxicate people far more successfully than improvised long jams.  Of course, you also gotta have talent - and if you have talent, it doesn't really matter if you're a great improviser or a great 'musician-mathematician'.

The most famous number on here, though, is, of course, 'Suzie-Q'. This one sounds as if the boys have made a bet with somebody they would be able to turn this timeless/classic R'n'B number into a monument (see the Stones' version on "12 X 5" Lp for further reference.) C.C.R. manage to make all the eight minutes of it as enjoyable as possible: interspersing the lyrics (partly sung through some kind of gadget so as to render the vocals with a swamp grit edge) and captivated by "flaming" guitar solos bringing the whole story to yet another breath-taking climax! s

Side two's 'Gloomy' is very gloomy, effectively so.  Elsewhere, 'Ninety-Nine And A Half (Just Won't Do)' keeps the pace, into the superior 'Working Man.' Ten the great blues rendition of 'Get Down Woman' shines with meaty hooks... To note: Fogerty delivers frantic bellowing on several of side two's tracks be it on 'Ninety-Nine', or the high-pitched, highly expressive guitar wail of 'Get Down Woman' and the backwards soloing on 'Gloomy'. Further more, as the group had not achieved commercial success, the song structures on this album are far more twisted and complicated than on many of their subsequent efforts: only 'Working Man', 'Porterville', and 'Get Down Woman' are fully conventional. All the other numbers are 'multi-part' constructions, with shifting tempos, clever gimmicks, and lots of crafty additives that distinguish the band's style from that of the far-less intellectually gifted competitors at the time. Side two's 'Walk On The Water' is a real highlight acting as terrific album closer complimented with a strong guitar burst in the middle...
