Label Condition: Main clean and attractive with any handling evidence moderately light. Spindle marks are fine and faint and fairly modest, these show little at all.

Cat Number: CS 9498.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Scarce: this US 360 sound is made rarer still with the uncensored ‘finger’ cover and the large poster that will rarely be seen or offered, especially in this outstanding condition. A large vintage poster that has not been mounted.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This legendary, albeit short-lived band, formed in 1966 in San Francisco, are famed for this issue. Released in 1967, the ‘Summer of Love’, Moby Grape, the self-titled album is regarded by many critics as the greatest debut album ever made and a bona fide classic. This band were ill-fated from the outset, their record company unwisely decided to issue five singles all at the same time and this grandiose overhype helped lead to their downfall - they simply could not live up to this album again. In 1968 Spence was diagnosed schizophrenic and had a breakdown and after two more mixed albums, Moby Grape fizzled out. All fine musicians, Spence had the most charisma, he radiated a special quality that seemed to lie behind his brilliant, offbeat compositions as well as his later disintegration - he returned in 1969 to issue another fragmented classic Oar. This famous album features a blend of styles including blues, country, soul, rock, jazz and psychedelia - little had been heard like this before on one record - a mini-masterpiece had been created. Controversy even boiled over on the cover, after printing and issue the record company belatedly noticed Stevenson was giving ‘the finger’, and this cover was reissued with the offending digit airbrushed out - it still did not please the company even then. This copy has the original artwork featured and the condition of the cover is superb, even exceptional for a US one and the record plays nigh-on perfectly. To make it still more appealing for the connoisseur collector, this one includes the large original poster, also depicting the ‘finger’ cover. This in equally superb condition and unmounted. An album for the discerniing 60s lover and collector. If, like most, you missed this groundbreaking issue back in the 60s, here is a really impressive US original in 360 degree stereo. For fans of classic albums of the period this is sure to please – try finding one of these better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated format with matt surfaces. Thick card and the usual paste-on style back panel. Printed and made in the United States.

Cover Front: Apart from a little mild burr-creasing near the bottom of the right opening edge, this is practically as made. In fact when I got this, a large portion of the original shrinkwrap was still attached, so much of this cover had not been held or exposed. Hence the pretty amazing condition. US covers do not wear as well as UK ones, but this is a real beauty. Rich dark colour retained with only a tiny few fine edge creases. The lack of rubbing, fading and ring marks is hugely unusual and this classic original, uncensored cover front almost sets the standards for others to be judged by.

Cover Back: Practically the same again with just a couple of small corner creases on the bottom pair. I can hardly imagine finding this better. US covers that find there way to the UK seldom survive quite this clean and fresh – remember too, the considerable age.

Top Edge: Minimal wear, no splits, slightly softened towards the right side.

Bottom Edge: Little short of as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, almost as sharp as when made, as stated, a little mild burr-creasing near the bottom of the front but still sharp with little wear. This guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters here.

Spine and Text: A near perfect spine and devoid of rubbing with no splits or repairs. Lovely neat shape and definition, all the magenta text is pristine perfect.

Corners: All four show little wear, any tip rubs tiny. Tip creasing on the bottom pair on the back but all retain excellent (or better) shape.

Cover Summary: A hugely impressive all-round example of this fragile late 60’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This rare uncensored ‘finger’ cover should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): a very rounded cornered unlined plain white inner. This practically as made with no edge splits, pristine window circles and almost as white as when made – incredible.

The Poster: MINT(-): a very rare and large unmounted poster that again shows the infamous original cover artwork. I am certain this is unique to the US version and how many will ever survive quite like this? Two horizontal and one vertical manufactured folds, all as strong as when made with no weakening or splits and all edges razor sharp, as are the corners. Any traces of creasing or crinkle minuscule and this retains superb rich colour on the matt surface. Even the back is still white with no stains or marks of any real note. A poster like this would have been so often wall-mounted, so the lack of pin-holes and tape marks is great news. I am certain this poster has not seen light-of-day for decades and put simply, reminds of new. A considerable rarity that exceeds mostof the famous UK posters that are in big demand. This my first one of these ever.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy. Impressively clean, shiny, jet black and solidly pressed. A few light surface marks/hairlines seen under light – US albums were softer than UK ones and do seem to mark more easily. Purely superficial and light with no sound whatsoever, many acquired during transit, all very normal for US imports. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare 360 stereo sound record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is incredibly clean and impressive. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted, few copies will play better than this. Both channels are clean and sharp. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic album. Still possibly an under-appreciated psych gem out of their native America, but for fans of early Jefferson Airplane and similar bands, this one is sure to please. This copy will prove incredibly difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
