Description
MORTON SUBOTNICK - The Wild Bull
Original US pressing on the Nonesuch label. The record and sleeve are in near mint condition. Still in shrink.
This one is the 1968 synthesiser album Wild Bull by Morton Subotnick on Nonesuch Records H-71208. Hard to find pristine copy of this 1968 lp with Subotnick's second Nonesuch-commissioned composition, realized on a custom-made electronic music system built by Donald Buchla. This beautiful and classic early electronic instrumental piece was inspired by an ancient Sumerian poem of the same name (reproduced in Subotnick's liner notes). It is for the most part calmer and more droning than Silver Apples of the Moon and is built around dark extended wailing, moaning, and breathing sounds and textures to evoke the poem's sense of personal loss (though it does eventually build into an up tempo rhythmic section towards the end that churns with percussive synth-noise @210bpm).
The album notes read the following:
Subotnick became prominent as an electronic and multi-media composer in the late 60s; he was a pupil of Leon Kirschner and Darius Milhaud and a master of the Buchla synth, blazed the same trails as James Tenney, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Herbert Eimert, Jean-Claude Risset, Pril Smiley, Jon Appleton, Pierre Henry, Terry Riley, Vladimir Ussachevsky, and John Eaton, and works often with his wife Joan La Barbara. The Buchla synth, an early Moog competitor, was created by Donald Buchla and pioneered musician-friendly user interface innovations; it has been used by Douglas Leedy, Paul Beaver, Bernard Krause, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Bulent Arel, Ragnar Grippe, Ernst Krenek and Daria Semegen.
