All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two very light, fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. This superb record appears hardly played and sounds fantastic.

Brief Info: The debut Mott the Hoople album, and for me, one of the best. Combining some covers with original material, a classic new band were born. Very first issues were wrongly pressed with the song ‘The Road to Birmingham,’ featuring at the end of side one, with ‘Backsliding Fearlessly’ replacing ‘Rock and Roll Queen’ at the start of side two. Those copies are rare and seldom surface for sale. This a standard corrected copy and hardly common as this failed to sell well only briefly appearing in the lower regions of the UK chart for a week, and fared worst still in the United States. Finding hardly played copies with a lovely clean little worn cover are difficult and this is on of the finest I have seen or heard to date.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated matt gatefold format. Printed and made in England, uncredited, includes the white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A really lovely clean looking front with little to fault bar a few small traces of toning near the left and right edges. The lack of rubbing and creasing make this wear-prone graphic look close to exceptional and aged little.

Cover Back: The back is even better and on its own can grade Mint(–) with any blemishes bordering on minuscule. The lack of ugly ring wear especially means this will rarely be seen better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside at all.

Top Edges: Moderate slightly patchy rubbing on pale surfaces, so it shows less than it could have.

Bottom Edges: Similar to above, but the rubbing lighter overall.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening little and light. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light, folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel, just the slightest tilt to left (being critical). The text is unworn, the surface avoiding rubbing but with light toning here-and-there.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs and retaining very fine to excellent shape with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this vintage late 1960’s cover, with only gentle polite clues of age, it will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: because the paper has moderately darkened with age with a smallish darker stain on the back as well. But little else to fault apart, this has avoided creasing and edge splits with two crisp unworn window circles and the polylining fresh and still clear. This is date coded 109 (October 1969).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a fantastic visual copy purchased new by one owner. Very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces minuscule, even as seen critically under bright light. Visually a supreme record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality debut album plays up to it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything at all and this is a very clean pressing by Phonogram with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early first corrected pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new Nessie Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
