Description
I purchased Hard Again, released in 1977, at a Music Plus store in 1983 after seeing the film Risky Business at a movie theatre. In the film there is a sequence with the soundtrack blaring out the raucous song “Mannish Boy” by Muddy Waters. A blues genre milestone from the 1950's, I immediately recognized that this was an inspired new version.
The musicianship of this album is a timeless combination of old school Chicago Blues musicians comprised of Muddy Waters, harpist James Cotton, pianist Pinetop Perkins, and drummer Willie Smith; with boomer blues artists that include guitarist Johnny Winters, who also produced this recording on Steve Paul’s Blue Sky Records. Tracks include other classic Muddy Waters songs like “I Can’t Be Satisfied (with excellent slide guitar by Winter) along with newer standouts like “Crosseyed Cat." The recording has a 'playing live' spontaneity and it is obviously that Muddy was very much enjoying this blues ensemble. The record received a Grammy Award in 1978 for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording.
Before listing this LP, I visually inspected it and moreover, enjoyed it in its entirety with a goal, to the best of my ability; provide a subjective evaluation of its condition as played on my turntable and through my audio system.
