Label Conditions: Both almost as made, any spindle traces are tiny and few. Very clean and attractive.

Cat Number: CRELP 040.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 120 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: The first of two full albums this influential alternative rock band made before all went quiet. Previously issuing singles and EPs but after the departure of original vocalist Dave Conway, who was replaced by Bilinda Butcher, the band made this groundbreaking debut album. A truly outstanding piece of work and a long personal favourite of mine from the 80s era. The vocals are muted and often very dark and disturbing, none more so than the chilling ‘No More Sorry’ with its child abuse content. The guitar sounds are almost unique and at times go into overdrive in ferocity, pure venom and anger is discharged into speaker cones that could struggle to cope if played loudly – and this does need to be played loudly to get the maximum effect. Issued to rave reviews, this was album of the year in several music magazines of the day. Time has not dampened its brutal intensity and subject matter and this creation leaves the head spinning. Still best experienced via the original vinyl format as the power unleashed has no equal. Some consider the second album ‘Loveless’ to be even better, but I still prefer this one. For those yet to experience MBV, well this superb copy will take some beating – not an album for the faint-hearted – compelling, timeless and quite brilliant.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ a single unlaminated format. Printed and made in England.

Cover Front & Back: A few tiny surface marks and edge hairline creases. Faint rim impression, but little else to fault.

Top Edge: Unworn and straight.

Bottom Edge: Practically as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering, untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed the text is little worn with just minor rub traces.

Corners: Light rub bottom right, odd tiny tip crease and all retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this wear-prone 80’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please most collectors.

The Inner: The plain white unlined inner is practically as made.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX, with a few light surface marks mostly on side one. These I feel certain are from manufacture. A simple fact is, these small independent label albums were often not as particular on quality as many of the majors. The good news is these fine marks are practically all ignored with just three or four faint ticks noted from just one between tracks. Much of this album so loud any minor sound blemishes are blown away anyway, but here, too few to mention. A fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy little played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This massive alternative album plays above its visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Hardly commercial and high in sound experimentation. It has powerful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. The only distortions are from those splintering guitar frenzies that piece the senses. The sound on this album is sometimes constricted, even muted but intentionally so. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no other pops or clicks were noted that those mentioned above and this is generally a clean pressing for sound. The intense savagery of the guitars and basslines that open side two with ‘Feed Me With Your Kiss’ are stunning, play this loud and shred your speaker cloth. No holding back on this one, this band made guitars sound like a different instrument and took their experimentation to new levels. The fine marks are pretty much ignored. Few copies will outperform this pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the first example I have found for ages. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
