Label/Format: Track – Intense black matt finish, later examples were paler and had a more shiny finish (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: All four in fantastic conditions: all very clean, incredibly fresh and highly attractive with any of the tiny few spindle marks small, light and faint. In fact, the first disc has hardly any and so very unusual to find these revealing labels for a very popular album so clean looking and without any doubt, hardly handled or used. Sparingly played and only on a quality stereo system, purchased from new by one owner.

Cat Number: Track Deluxe Double (set) 2657013. The labels have the number 2406-110 / 011

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 122 / 127 grams. Good solid weights.

Country of Manufacture: RECORDS & INNERS: England – COVER: Holland. The vast majority of covers for this UK copy were Dutch made. A more specialised cover with a huge and heavy book inside. I assume the Dutch manufacturer was more ‘geared-up’ to produce this more unusual format sleeve.

Rarity: Moderate: but it’s the conditions that really make the difference. The early pressings with the intense black labels that have hardly been played and offer top quality sound, are far harder to find. And of course, there is the cover. Later covers were darker and do look different to the earlier made ones. The main outside faces are flimsy, the spine very thick and not that rigid, expecting it to support the thick and heavy book for many years is a huge ask, most are seen totally detached and seldom still connected to the cover. Often not manufactured to the best standards either, with the book adhered to cover lop-sided and I have actually seen examples poking out of the either edge. Pulled pages from the two staples are commonly seen, sometimes torn even with pages missing. To find one of these still intact, neatly constructed e.g. the book squarely inside with no overhang and the cover little worn with an uncrushed spine is very difficult indeed. This copy has the book STILL attached, but quite delicate, so care needed to keep it so. And the spine still erect and uncrushed with only fairly light rubbing to the ends. Later examples are seen with pale, more grey looking Track labels made with wafer-thin vinyl. The very black labels were not around too much longer after this album’s issue – like ‘Who’s next’, that too is usually seen on the more grey-black format. Not too difficult to find as such, but this is a very fine all-round copy and the cover is intact and the records offer superb sound. This beauty hits the mark and it will not prove too easy to find better.

Musicians: Roger Daltrey – lead vocals; Pete Townshend – acoustic and electric guitars, backing vocals, synthesisers, piano, banjo, sound effects, lead vocals, special effects; John Entwistle – bass guitar, horns, backing vocals; Keith Moon – drums, percussion, lead vocals on ‘Bell Boy’.

Brief Info: A near impossible task to follow-up ‘Who’s Next’ and ‘Tommy’, but this monumental double set arguably reaches even higher standards or brilliance. A second rock opera that was set in the 1960s based around the Mods and Rockers gang rivalry at the time. The lead character is Jimmy, a tormented Mod youth, heavily into scooters, music, gang fights and drugs, the story follows his psychological problems and social attitude and eventually his path to self-destruction. The music and sound quality is simply of the highest possible calibre. Set in London and a weekend in Brighton, just listen to the sea with it’s crashing waves, it sounds so real you could be on the beach yourself. At last, a copy that does this evergreen masterpiece practically full justice. A little worn – and importantly – still INTACT cover, with the book still attached, but a little loosened, so care needed. This is held together with two staples but these were not punched into the spine, hence very fragile, the back page of the book is adhered to the inside cover to hold it in place. But the weight puts enormous pressure on the staples and virtually all pull out and the pages detach – this slightly loosened, but still intact. Both records look little played and offer fantastic sound – just a couple of light ticks were heard through the entire duration and nothing else. A really impressive copy for those who need one, or it could prove to be a significant upgrade.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. This has the paler, more grey hue which is correct, also fairly flimsy card. Later ones became blacker and a little more firmer. Inside is a 44-page (22 sheets) black and white book with all the song lyrics and details. Also many pictures following Jimmy’s story. Printed and made by Euro Albums Holland.

Cover Front: A quite flimsy cover that was barely up to the job of supporting the weight of two records and the very large and heavy book inside. Thus, the majority are tired looking, damaged and the book separated. This front is in very fine condition with any rim rubbing ultra fine, little and faint. Barely any creasing and just the odd minor mark or so. Very clean, fresh and attractive, this first issue printing has a more pastel grey looking finish, whereas later examples were considerably darker. A fragile front that does not age well and this one will prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is similar with just the odd small corner rub or crease. The lack of ring wear is highly significant on a cover that rarely seems to avoid it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: I remind again, this is the standard Dutch-made cover as seen from the inside back cover imprint. Little wear inside here and the book remains intact with just some light pulling evident on the staples that holds the inner pages to the outer ones. If these pull out and detach, there is no going back, thus very few remain attached these days, the weight puts enormous pressing on a single leaf paper sheet. The outer book final page is firmly stuck to the inner back cover and that will not pull, it is the pages inside this cover where the problem lies. All pages of the book are clean and uncreased, a little loosened from the book outer pages, so again, great care needed to keep this attached.

Top and Bottom Edges: Any rubbing light and faint, all neat.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring mild and light as seen viewed end-on. Records enter on these edges that are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Another very fragile part of this cover: it is fairly thin and flimsy and definitely under-strength to support the weight of this fully laden album. Obviously thick to cover the book, but the staples are not punched into it which would have been a much better idea. Solid, straight with no real compression and uncrushed too. Still very erect with barely any tilt as seen on my close-up pictures. Folded squarely so the edges meet up together, nigh-on flush and parallel. This makes a big difference for the more discerning collector for neatness and visual enjoyment. Barely any rubbing to the main area or folds, just some near the ends. The first covers have the text: ‘THE WHO QUADROPHENIA’ & ‘TRACK DELUXE DOUBLE 2657013’ as can be clearly seen. All this text is perfect and unworn, and again, do not take this for granted.

Corners: The fragile corners have light to moderate rubbing, few will avoid it. All retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. Some of these had four staples and have a better chance of surviving intact – those with two have little hope really and finding this one with the book still connected is highly unusual. This very attractive all-round item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT: these are Polydor-style lined inners and both look very similar. The owner initialled both with the album name on the back top right corner area. A little quite gentle ageing with light to near moderate edge toning. One corner crease only and the window circles are neat and crisp, the lining secure and clear with a little crinkle. All edges are unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Any surface traces are very few, fine and faint as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. The merest hint of inner lining dulling seen on side one, totally harmless and barely even visible. A pair with minimal plays on all the evidence and both records offer superb high fidelity sound. Visually impressive records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play even above their high visual grading with little to fault at all. A real high fidelity recording with great power, sonic delivery and detail. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and a great production. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops were noted and just a couple of gentle ticks on side four – that highly impressive for a fairly long double set. It is a little difficult to put into words, but some copies just sound that little bit better than others with a little more detail, sonic delivery and punch – this copy offered just that and it impressed me immensely. Few available copies will significantly outperform this early pressing I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these high quality Track records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
