Some 200 instruments were used, from almost all (non-European) parts of the world, made available from the Instrument Collection of the Munich Stadtmuseum, from the Otoia Collection and the Olympic Committee in Munich, Germany, from the "Institut Fondamental D'Afrique Noire" of Dakar University, by Dr. Ramon Pelinski and Rolf Miehler, by the composer, and by the performers themselves. here's a review:
here's a review by Amazon: This one of most interesting pieces from the argentinian composer Mauricio Kagel, and one of the greatest versions.

This piece uses non-european instruments and voices (most of them sung by the instrumentists on stage, apart from indian's voices on tape); but in the way of european avantgarde music from the '60s. The result is impresionant, but it could be confused with humour if it's not listened with care and heart. Voices have some links with Stockhausen's Stimmung, but Kagel's work results more complete and perfect, I think.

Ensemble Modern players, conducted by Kagel, give them best on this live recording from Bonn (released too on Aulos label), with a great sense on their playing and with a bit of "humour" on their interpretation; a little bit more than the other great version played for Deutsche Grammophon by Siegfried Palm, Caskel... conducted by Kagel, and now out of stock like this. DG version is longer and very different. For a great understanding of this work you should have both, if you can, because labels use to take out of market this important vanguard recordings.

Only for music lovers with a very open mind about music.
