Description
HERE is a rare UK stereo first pressing of McDonald & Giles' self-titled LP on the pink island label from 1970 - a true first pressing, complete with A-2U/B-2U matrices and gorgeous widespine gatefold sleeve. What's more, this example is in fabulous EX/EX condition, having hardly been played.
The lovely pink island labels look perfect with no unwanted writing, no sticker residue and no tears, with only the wispiest of spindle marks discernible when viewed under strong halogen lighting, revealing minimal use.
Both sides of the disc, which features 1/1 mother stampers, also look perfect, with only the very lightest of handling marks to be seen when examined under light. It is obvious this disc has been very little played and extremely well cared for over the years.
The lovely widespine gatefold sleeve bears the first press E J Day printing credit and retains its vibrant colouring. The unlaminated sleeve is very well preserved with lovely razor-straight edges and uncrushed wide spine with fully readable spinal text but just some wear to the top of the spine and a general waviness to the cover, which may not be easy to see in my photos.
Many music-lovers consider this album to be the true successor to King Crimson's In The Court Of The Crimson King, featuring the multi-talented Ian McDonald with not one Giles but two (brothers Michael and Peter) as well as Stevie Winwood. McDonald and Giles is a beautiful recording, with the side-long (21 minutes) Birdman a musical representation of a trip - getting high, soaring, coming down again; just great to listen to with the lights down.
