Description
Fantastic condition (cover still has shrinkwrap on!). original Beware Records pressing from 1987. comes with lyric sheet. all in top notch shape. Aside from rarity value, it's a great lp. tuneful skate rock that put mein mind of both bad brains (who Chuck Treece later played for) and Underdog (when they were good - not that awful lp!). I'd never realised before that mainman Chuck had been a pro skater - or played as a session man for BIlly Joel!!
It's fitting that Chuck Treece would later count his greatest accomplishment not as being a renowned session player who worked with the likes of Billy Joel, but occupying the drum stool for Bad Brains on the venerable band's touring to support Rise; especially when you listen to his first band McRad. Alternative Tentacles fueled a resurgence in the old-school skate rock scene with reissues in 2001 of bands such as Los Olvidados and Free Beer. The material on the 1987 disc fits in sonically and aesthetically with the rudimentary thrashing heard on labels such as Boner Records and touted in ~Flipside Magazine, even though McRad was an East Coast group (most skate rock culture originated out West). Absence of Sanity also shows a maturity that put the band light years ahead of its peers in the pre-X-Games-and-endorsement-deals world, and this is due to the obvious love and admiration of Bad Brains. Mindless thrashing and inane lyrics of the group's skater brethren are replaced by thoughtful themes and, much like the Brains pioneered, an infusion of reggae ("Words of Life" is a straight-up dub track that fuses into an anthemic riff and inspirational vocals) mixed with the punk rock. It works so perfectly you can't help but conclude that McRad deserved a better fate, and that this release is not sheer nostalgia. Absence of Sanity, even without the additional live songs and two cuts from a 1984 compilation, holds up decades after its initial release, and cliché be damned, sounds just as fresh as it did back in the day. ~ Brian O'Neill, All Music Guide
The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Chuck Treece, McRad were the defining skate-rock band of the late 1980's and a favorite of guys like Tony Hawk, who swears by them to this day. With Uprising's reissuing of their seminal Absence of Sanity album re-igniting the storm, McRad have seen fit to grace the public with a reinvigorated reemergence. An essential skate punk classic!!
Chuck is not only a great musician he was a sponsored skateboarder from 1982-1990. Chuck rode for Madrid Skateboards, Gullwing Trucks, OJ Wheels, Santa Cruz Skateboards, Thunder Trucks, Ollie Wheels, Airwalk Sneakers & he had a pro model on Sure Grip. The first time I heard McRad was on the Savannah Slamma skate video. I held my old boombox up to the TV and recorded the songs. The song "Weakness" is famous for introducing the world to the infamous "Rubber Boys" (Ray Barbee, Steve Saiz and Eric Sanderson)in the video "Public Domain". Do yourself a favor and GET THIS lp! If you're an oldschool skate punk you'll know what I'm talking about. This lpmakes me want to grab my skate and hit the curbs! Chuck even did a tour playing bass for the BAD BRAINS... how cool is that!!? He's the real deal for sure. I'm waiting for his new band, TENT, to release their album. Reggae, jazz, punk... Chuck is a true artist. Now go do a boneless! +
I had been looking for Mc Rad material since I first heard them on the Public Domain skateboarding video back in the 1980's. It brings back memories of the old school skating days. Whenever I listen to the lp it pumps me up to grab my board and hit the streets, something I rarely do nowadays. This lpshould be in the collection of any skateboarder or former skateboarder, whether or not the person was involved in the skate scene in the 1980's.
