Amy Johnson is the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia.
Amy received a C.B.E. In recognition of her feat. ‘Jason’ Amy’s Gypsy Moth can been seen at the Science Museum in London. Amy wrote her signature into the soft master of the recording, every record has her signature under the label as you can see to the bottom of the label on this pressing.
Amy was born in Hull East Yorkshire in 1903, although she seems to have lost any Yorkshire accent by 1930.
She took up flying in the winter of 1928/29, after she made her first solo flight she qualified as the first woman ground engineer. The next year she made this flight solo to Australia, over the next few years she broke or created many records. At the outbreak of WWII she joined the Air Transport Auxiliary, ferrying new aircraft from factories to R.A.F. bases. It was on a routine flight on the 5th of January 1941 thst she disappeared over the Thames. Her body was never recovered. The reason for her flight remains a secret, there have been many theories as to what happened including flying into barrage balloons. In 1999 Tom Mitchell claimed he challenged the pilot of a plane, who twice gave him the wrong password for the day and was therefore shot down as enemy aircraft. She was
