In his perceptive little essay, “Zu einer neuen Aesthetik in Musik", Professor Ferruccio Busoni, the great piano virtuoso and philosopher says: “All music ever aims at one end, namely, the imitation of nature and the interpretation of human feelings/' By using this rather teleological account of music as a criterion for the determination of the quality of a musical work, we find that the simple melodies of the mountains, in their own way, can be favorable compared with the complexities of a Bachian fugal exposition. Do these melodies with their expressive lyrics not reveal the Volkgeist, as it were, of the mountain people? The mountain man sitting with the dulcimer on his lap solemnly poured into his songs a veritable reflection of the live of his spirit: the gentle ardour of his love (Wildwood Flower), his eschatological mysticism which was heightened by his toilsome labours (I'm Dreaming of a Little Cabin and I'm Longing For Home), and his appreciation of sensuous beauty (Pretty Polly). From a purely technical point of view, the dulcimer is a member of the string family and is played by strumming. Easily discerned is the tuning system in which the four different strings stand in relation to each other: it is based uj»on the perfect intervals of the unison and fifth giving the sound a timeless and unchanging quality. The more aurally sophisti- cated listener will undoubtedly detect the tuning scheme of the individual strings. Each string is tuned to the fourth medieval ecclesiastical authentic mode, the mixolydian. Such familiar and beautiful Gregorian chants as the lovely "Cor Jesu Sacratissimum" from the Liber Usualis are written in this mode. For the uninitiate,this mode can be constructed by playing the white note scale from g to g without accidentals. This produces a flat seventh tone step when considered in the light of the customarily used major scale. It has long been an accepted dogma that only a Pole can play the music of Chopin and only a Teuton can interpret Beethoven. Much the same holds true for mountain music. It is impossible for a city-bred artist to begin, even after extensive study and effort, to phrase correctly, to color with delicate nuance the music of the mountains-only a person who has been born and raised in the mountains can do so. The artist presented on this record, Mrs. Mollie Bowlin, is eminently qualified for this task. The songs herein per formed were not learned from the study of a book but were passed on to her by her father. The songs are like the polished and rounded pebbles of a mountain stream: they have been orally transmitted from generation to generation with each new generation polishing, adding and making the songs receptive to the emotions of that generation. In this way Mrs. Bowlin received the songs which she performs on this recording. Let us, then, forget the technicalities, the complexities of this modern era and sit and enjoy songs which have come from a dialectical process as old as the first man who was imbued with the spirit of the mountains.
