Description
The Moody Bible Sacred Harp Singers. Shape-note singing, 1929. Paramount 3152. Described as "Vocal, Violin-Guitar, Organ Acc". Singers are C Phillip Reeve, C. Earnest Moody, RE Worsham, CC Harper.
Related groups are the Dixie Crackers, Calhoun Sacred Quartet, North Georgia 4, Georgia Yellow Hammers.
This recording is _not_ related to Chicago's Moody Bible Institute. (Group's leader was named Moody.) Also, although this recording group's name is "Moody Bible Sacred Harp Singers," they are actually singing from the 7-shape Christian Harmony tunebook, not the Sacred Harp tunebook (?!), and they are singing doremi syllables before the words, not fasola syllables. A recording from Calhoun, Georgia, and surroundings in the North Georgia mountains, which still can boast of an All-day Sacred Harp Singing and an All-Day Christian Harmony singing.
"Liberty" is an eighteenth-century New England fuguing tune by Stephen Jenks. "In that Morning" is a traditional 19-century camp-meeting tune.
A smooth vocal presentation, and a rare commercial recording from William Walker's 1866 7-shape Christian Harmony tunebook. I am unaware of commercial recordings from other groups using this "old book" doremi idiom. It is also notable that a minor-key tune (In That Morning) appears commercially.
Grading? I am not a record dealer. From the charts I see, this looks like E-/V+. It plays nicely but there is surface noise.
Hymns, fuguing tunes, gospel (not), Harmonia Sacra, New Harp of Columbia, folk hymns, camp-meeting tunes, roots music.
