description:
Not many avant classical compilations bring together so many great composers all on the same record. Subtitled "new pieces for chorus and for voices altered electronically by sound synthesizers and vocoder," all of the works on this excellent lp involve electroacoustic or physical extensions of the human voice, and are performed by the Brandeis University Chamber Chorus under the direction of Alvin Lucier. Cage's composition was electronically realized by Gordon Mumma and David Tudor and involves realtime processing and microphones for the throats and lips of the performers. The Lucier piece makes very early use of the Sylvania Electronic Systems Vocoder (this lp is considered one of the first commercial recordings of a vocoder). Oliveros' composition allows singers to improvise an array of vocal noises; it was awarded the Gaudeamus prize by Gyorgy Ligeti. The Ichyanagi work uses Buchla and Moog synthesizers. The 2 works by Feldman are sparse and ambient, and the voices drift in and out of audibility. The wide array of music and avant garde compositional style on this album ranges from droning and minimalism to dada-esque insanity to brilliant soundscapes of vocal-sourced electronic noise.
artist info from album notes etc.:
Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), composed early electronic music in Louis and Bebe Barron's studio and at the Studio di Fonologia in Milan (where Henri Pousseur, Luciano Berio, Luigi Nono, Andre Boucourechliev, Bengt Hambraeus, and Bruno Maderna also worked), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, Lejaren Hiller, Sun Ra, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). • Morton Feldman studied under Wallingford Riegger and Stefan Wolpe and was influenced by Scriabin, Ligeti, Cornelius Cardew, and Mauricio Kagel; he became a key member of the New York School of experimental American composers, was one of the first composers to use graphic notation, a technique influenced by his many close friends in the visual arts (such as Mark Rothko, Philip Guston, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg), and he also pioneered the use of indeterminacy in his scores. • Oliveros studied under Hugh Le Caine, Robert Erickson, and Thomas Nee, has worked with Terry Riley, Morton Subotnick, Luciano Berio, and Stuart Dempster, and is an experimental pioneer who combined electronics, minimalism, meditation, droning, just intonation tuning, and improvisation. • Ichyanagi is a Japanese experimental composer who was influenced by John Cage, worked with Michael Ranta and Takehisa Kosugi, and was a member of the Fluxus art movement. • This album should be heard by anyone interested in experimental vocalists like Tristan Tzara, Kurt Schwitters, Pierre Henry, Cathy Berberian, Joan La Barbara, Meredith Monk, and Diamanda Galas, and vocoder users like Cylob, Luke Vibert, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, and Laurie Anderson.
