I can't believe I'm actually doing this. 44 years in the making, up for grabs is my precious Mott the Hoople collection of sealed first pressings and rarities.
There are a couple of exceptions, but exceptions chosen for the sake of value to this collection. The best way to describe this once in a lifetime set and explain my reasoning is to go through one by one in order of release:
1. Mott the Hoople, S/T - Drop dead mint, slight crunch on bottom left corner, otherwise perfect. 1841 Broadway address, as all the first four have - see photos closely. SD 8258
2. Mad Shadows - cutout, top left, otherwise mint. SD 8272
3. Wildlife - tiny cutout on top, stunning copy. SD 8284
4. Brain Capers - as mint as it gets. SD 8304
5. Brain Capers - small slice-out top right, Canadian import on Island label, sealed as well, but included because it doesn't have the big black mask on the cover, otherwise songs are the same. May have pink rim around label? ILPS 9178.
6. Rock and Roll Queen - cutout bottom left, no fading of white background, beautiful. SD 7297.
7. All the Young Dudes - NOT SEALED, in fact cover is a bit rough looking, but the lp is nm. But here's the kicker: a super rare promo copy (with the single All the Young Dudes' success not many promos were needed)! What really makes this one killer is hidden inside the record. When I opened it I found a promo copy of the single with a rare picture sleeve. Another oddity with this copy is it has the UK album sleeve with the band members??? I've never seen or heard of that, but there it is. -- KC 31750.
8. All the Young Dudes Promo 45 rpm - sleeve is nm-, with some minor crinkling along the top, otherwise fantastic and oh so rare. The 45 came inside with the lp and has never been played, not even to check it for this sale. There is a very minor mark on the mono side which may or may not wash off, I'll let you decide what, if anything, to do with it. The 45 is in the exact condition it came in new. 4-45673, JZSP 157016 (#16? - maybe).
9. Mott - UK import copy. I much prefer this cover to the boring brown US release. Besides, the CBS UK vinyl sounds superior. Rolling Stone Magazine's #1 album of the year, 1973. CBS 69038.
10. The Hoople - Good luck finding one of these, almost as rare as a sealed copy of the first lp. Sticker says $3.97 - I wish. Clean, no holes, cuts, nuthin. PC 32871.
11. OK, so I skipped the Columbia Live lp. Why? Cause it sucks. In it's place is the famous 1974 Santa Monica, CA concert complete on the bootleg TAKRL label, recorded straight off the mixing board. Instead of chopping up the show the way they did on the Columbia release, here is the whole thing. A better, more powerful example of our heroes at their peek. Sadly without Mick. However, amongst most of us Hoople Heads this show is the one to have, the best live show on vinyl despite Angel Air's respectable release of many "lost" live tapes. This lp is NOT SEALED, but is nm/nm, sounds great. TAKRL 1918.
12. Greatest Hits - Factory seal is torn, but covers the opening. Clearly never removed, it would be impossible. Otherwise Great. Columbia 34368.
13. Drive On - Yeah, I know, I almost excluded this one too, but what the heck, If it has Overand and Buffin it can't be all bad. Original silver copy UK import, great shape. CBS 69154
14. Live in Sweden 1971 - I know it is still easy to get, but I wanted this collection to be complete and no Mott collection can stand up without the early live incarnation - the one that started it all.
Well, there you have it. The entire relevant Mott the Hoople catalog on vinyl, all sealed first pressings, unless otherwise noted, with none of the newer repeats. Perhaps the most underrated rock band in history whose influence can still be heard today and most likely forever.
