Description
Performer Notes:
- African Head Charge includes: Bonjo Iyanbinghi Noah, Deadly Headley, Doctor Pablo.
- British producer Adrian Sherwood is the architect behind some of the '80s' most progressive dub projects for the On-U label, including Creation Rebel, Dub Syndicate, and many others. Perhaps his finest work, though, was with African Head Charge, a studio assemblage of reggae session men and guest vocalists who helped Sherwood realize his vision of a dub sound that incorporated the forceful post-punk aesthetic of 1981 with a warped, almost psychedelic sensibility. In this, Sherwood was influenced by David Byrne/Brian Eno's MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS (released earlier the same year), from which this album's title was derived.
- Besides Sherwood's swirling, engrossing production style, the unifying element of HOLE IN THE GROUND is the percussion of Bonjo I, whose hand drumming works in conjunction with the drumkit work of Mus'come and A.V. Scott to create a percolating, constantly shifting framework. Over this rhythm bed, atmospheric, chant-like vocals, screwy jaw harp and off-kilter horn lines come and go. In this manner, Sherwood provides the ideal combination of grounded rhythm and heady texture.
