Description
1-of-a-kind 1952 16" radio lacqer transcription discs. Note: A 16" transcription turntable is required to play these discs. A digital wav or MP3 file of entire program included. Dramatic radio production of "The Traitor", By Herman Wouk, author of "The Caine Mutiny". Featuring actors Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. 1 hour in length on four, 1-sided lacquer acetate, aluminum-core discs. Part of a series "Theater Guild Of The Air" "US Steel Hour". Discs are playable, but there is a fair amount of surface noise. Disc 1 and 3 I would describe as fair, no skipping, with staccato surface noise . The accompanying digital file will have these artifacts digitally reduced. Discs 2 and 4 are described as good condition. There are grease pencil marks on each disc denoting where an opinion piece for US Steel is located, this one a short essay on the Amercian public's various attitudes about the Korean War. Various notes on labels denote the dates these discs were broadcast on the radio. Original sleeves and labels are in fragile condition. These discs be packed very carefully to arrive intact.
Play synopsis: The title figure of THE TRAITOR is a thoughtful and earnest atomic scientist who has no regard for communism, but who sincerely believes that the only way to prevent the catastrophe of a final world war is to surrender the secret of the atomic bomb to Russia. As he reasons, the sharing of an open secret would bring an end to hysteria and arms races. His fiancee receives in his school study an old friend of hers, a Lieutenant in Naval Intelligence. He proceeds cautiously, gathering evidence. Then, in the scientist's absence, a naval crew suddenly descends upon the study to make a sweeping examination and to wire it for sound. It precipitates the crisis in which the scientist finally understands his treachery. He lends himself heroically in the gun-battle climax when a high-ranking Russian secret agent appears. The lacquer coating on these discs is shows no chipping with the exception of one tiny flaw "bubble" on Disc 1, visible in the photographs. It occurs at the very start of the outside band, and should be bypassed by the stylus to avoid enlarging the bubble.
THE BUYER WILL ALSO RECEIVE A DIGITAL FILE OF ENTIRE PROGRAM (wav and/or MP3). This recording, made at 96kHz, 24 bit, has been painstakingly processed to minimize the staccato surface noise on discs 1 and 3.
While many audio downloads of vintage Theater Guild productions are available on line, "The Traitor" with Bogart and Bacall is not found among them.
"The United States Steel Hour- Theater Guild of the Air" was a critically acclaimed radio drama production that ran from 1945 to 1953, and eventually moved to television.
