On offer is the 1969 debut LP by NICK DRAKE, FIVE LEAVES LEFT, on the original issue ‘’pink eye’ ISLAND label, catalogue number ILPS 9105. Not so much an LP, as a holy relic!
Truth to tell, it’s not in great condition. I would have called it ‘distressed’ and recommended it as a ‘filler’ until the ultimate upgrade comes along, if you’re exceptionally lucky.
And then I played it, and, actually, it’s eminently playable, with scuffing sounds that diminish after the first track on each side and no more than clicks thereafter, although there are 19 consecutive clicks on ‘Way to Blue’.
(This is probably known about, but I’ve only just noticed it: the track listing on the sleeve differs from the actual playing order, with ‘Day is Done’ and ‘Way to Blue’ reversed on Side 1.)
It might be a textbook VERY GOOD, according to the Record Collector Guide: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.
The normal wear and tear on the gatefold sleeve includes a worn spine, a 1mm tear on the left edge, and 4mm tear on the bottom back which crosses the ‘l’ of Island. See picture. VERY GOOD MINUS would be fair, I feel.
Labels are surprisingly clean and free of spindle-wear. Original inner sleeve: no poly liner, Patent No. 1,125,555.
A nice ‘filler’ until the ultimate upgrade comes along, if you’re exceptionally lucky.
