Artist: John Barbour-James
Tracks: Halla Waku Baru / Ma Yaro
Extremely rare example of one of the earliest commercial recordings in a Nigerian language - from about 1926. Barbour-James was actually from Guyana, and was already in his mid-50s when he recorded these in England. In 1918 he started an organization called the African Patriotic Intelligence Bureau. This is a rare direct example of the crossover from West Africa to South America.
John Barbour-James is singing in Hausa, dramatic solo singing for most of "Halla Waku" until other male voices come in near the end. "Mi Yaro" has a little percussion. Both songs are very chant-like.
Condition: V+ (some wear and tics, slight warp NAP, plays well with a 2.5 or so)
