Description
On offer in this 10-day auction with a B-I-N option is a beautiful 4 x 78 rpm 12" acoustic record set of the original Berlin,1913 recording of "BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 5 in C minor, op. 67" by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by PROFESSOR ARTHUR NIKISCH, on the German violet/gold early Nipper label, 'Schallplatte Grammophon 69504- 69507'.
Regarding this historical recording rarity, Pristine Classical said that, “It's regularly stated that Arthur Nikisch's 1913 recording of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony was the first complete recording of any symphony to be made. But this is not true and it wasn't even the first recording of this particular symphony. For that we have to turn the clock back a further three years, and dig out a recording made by Friedrich Kark and the Odeon Symphony Orchestra in 1910, issued on the Odeon label. Perhaps it is better suggested that Nikisch's was the first by a "proper", named and highly regarded professional orchestra, under a conductor still rated today as one of the greatest of all time.”
The disc surfaces are very clean and glossy, with no scratches, scuffs, chips, flakes, or cracks. The labels are also clean with a minimal amount of spindle-hole wear. Overall, these rare 104-year old discs are in exceptional condition. Audibly, the sound is clear and strong on my ‘Rondine 3 Rek-O-Kut’ turntable with Stanton cartridge/78 rpm styli combination.
