Released in September 1981, Nirvana's sophomore album and major label debut elevated Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl from a critically acclaimed Aberdeen, Washington, cult band to generational spokesmen who'd unwittingly created a cultural shift and musical touchstone. Nirvana’s second real album (there was another one in between Nevermind and In Utero but that was just some rarities and oddball tracks) and, as before, it’s a beaut! In Utero hit No.1 on both sides of the Atlantic following up on the incredible fanbase which Nevermind created. Contains the hit single U.K. hit Heart-Shaped Box (No.5, August ’93) and another hit All Apologies.

Unhappy with the high-gloss production and pop-based arrangements on Nevermind, Nirvana set out to make a harsher album that would literally alienate millions. While the trio succeeded in its goal of getting intimate with blistering dissonance and acerbic tones, In Utero resonated with the public, debuting at #1 on the Billboard charts and ultimately selling more than four million copies. Echoing John Lennon, Cobain’s piercing songwriting spoke to the disaffected masses that shared his anguish and set new standards for ironic depth that still stand.

In Utero was the studio follow-up to to band's 1991 breakthrough, Nevermind, and would go on to define the voice of a conflicted and disenchanted grunge generation. David Fricke described In Utero as "brilliant, corrosive, enraged and thoughtful, most of them all at once. But more than anything, it's a triumph of the will," in his review for Rolling Stone.

This compilation album was originally released in 2002 following the settlement of a long-standing dispute between Kurt Cobain's widow and surviving Nirvana members. The dispute largely centered around the song "You Know You're Right" which was recorded during the band's final studio session.

The collection includes material recorded from 1988 to 1994 taken from albums Bleach, Blew, Incesticide, Nevermind, In Utero, and MTV Unplugged in New York.

When it first appeared, Bleach seemed like a tuneful approximation of what grunge rock in the Northwest United States was supposed to sound like--gruff, enraged, sometimes tuneful, sometimes silly. Singer Kurt Cobain had the pipes to belt out such power trash as "Mr. Moustache" and the Shocking Blue's "Love Buzz," but considering the sheer volume of frustrated tuneage coming out of Seattle in 1989, it was easy to miss Bleach's subtler textures. In retrospect, "Negative Creep" and "About a Girl" are the obvious standouts that point toward the strum and bang attack that would catapult NEVERMIND to the top of the charts.  Producer Jack Endino gave this album the best sound $600 could buy
