NOTES
"Banished Bridge", rare debut album by NOVALIS, released in 1973, offered here as a GERMAN ORIGINAL PRESSING on the highly collectable BRAIN METRONOME GREEN label with the catalogue number BRAIN 1029.
Vinyl is great, has been played very little through the years....only under strong light you can search for a few faint hairlines, nothing really to mention....cover is excellent too without cut-out hole ! Please have a look at the photos - rare and highly collectable album in superb excellent condition.
During the mid-seventies, the Hamburg-based band NOVALIS established themselves as leaders in the field of German-language romantic rock. The quartet called itself NOVALIS after the most important German poet of early romanticism. They created a rock music of poetic, lyrical with german lyrics and instrumental beauty. Their music, a heavy organ rock, was compared to the sounds of bands such KING CRIMSON and PINK FLOYD. They released a few albums of lush, keyboard-dominant prog rock during the seventies. The keyboards created majestic layers on which the guitar builds airy melodies. Starting with heavily organ-accentued art rock a-la KING CRIMSON (and on their debut, "Banished Bridge", including English lyrics), NOVALIS later developped their own unique style, a mixture of progressive, classic, folk and rock. "Banished Bridge" shows their KING CRIMSON influences... in a dreamy, laid back progressive rock.
"Banished Bridge" is my favourite Novalis album! Just magical. The dynamics are utterly stunning. Lutz Rahn's keyboard work is fantastic. That organ! Wow! The melodies are very different to anything I've heard from Germany or anywhere else for that matter. Imagine a darker, more melancholic PFM and you might be able to imagine what this one sounds like. This album is quite simply an essential recording and stands up easily to all other German prog bands of the 70's. "Banished Bridge" is 4 tracks of indispensable lush symphonic prog rock with deep melodies. Many of NOVALIS' lyrics were based on the poetry of 16th century poet Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg ("NOVALIS" was his alias). The opening 17-minute title-track track is worth the admission into this one alone, with some succulent organ and synth work, PINK FLOYD-like atmospheres and even sound effects. The wild thing on this album is that I don't believe there are any guitars ! and the lack of is not troublesome. Lead singer Jürgen Wenzel sings (and speaks) in English and does so without any irritation to the listener. The 3 other tracks are also excellent with more FLOYD-like atmospheres (aka "Ummagumma") with a highly exploratory nature... something they kind of deviated from on their later albums. A truly great album !
