This fascinating and rare LP from Acanta (40.23 314, German pressing, red label, mono) features legendary violinist Ginette Neveu in a “live” performance of Brahms’s Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 77, broadcast from the Hamburger Musikhalle on 3 May 1948 with Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt conducting the Sinfonieorchester des Norddeutschen Rundfunks.

Of this performance, the eminent critic Heinz Joachim in the German newspaper ‘Die Welt the following day: “The performance was of compelling musicality, virtuosity and brilliant, magnificent passion. She was justifiably acclaimed with overwhelming enthusiasm.”

And of the Ancanta/Pilz CD re-issue of this performance, the fine critic Lynn René Bayley wrote for Fanfare:

“This is an absolutely splendid reissue of Neveu’s May 1948 performance of the Brahms Concerto. Those already familiar with this version don’t need to be told of its virtues, which include a wonderful singing tone, impassioned playing without any rough bowing, and an almost transcendent luminosity to Neveu’s phrasing, but it should be pointed out that this live performance is even more spacious and, in places, more intense than her 1946 studio recording.

 
“Apparently, after her EMI recording with Issay Dobrowen, Neveu became something of a specialist in this concerto. In addition to this Schmidt-Isserstedt performance, part of which (17 minutes’ worth) also came out on In Memoriam Ginette Neveu (Tahra 684), there’s another 1948 performance with Roger Désormière and the Orchestre National de France (issued in 2012 on Tahra, which I haven’t heard) and a June 1949 performance with Antal Doráti conducting the Hague Residentie Orchestra on Music & Arts 4837. The sound on this Acanta release borders on the spectacular for a 1948 broadcast: spacious, clear, and warm all at the same time. It doesn’t sound so much as if she is in the room with you than as if you are at the concert hall listening to her play. Seldom has Neveu’s sound been captured so realistically, thus for her many fans this should be a must-get item.”

There are fine liner notes on interior panels of the gatefold jacket by Jean Gallois, printed in German and English. The memorable cover photo of Neveu is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD-. There is edgewear, creasing, and shelfwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the whole remains very solid and presentation worthy – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
