O.A.R. are a product of the jam band explosion of the 90s, and emerged as a commercially successful group in the early 00s. Their latest album, The Rockville LP, is their first studio offering in over three years and retains their characteristic mixture of rock, pop, folk and light ska/reggae-ish elements.
Lead singer Marc Roberge has said that the new record was a deliberate effort to reconnect with their roots, and as a result, they spent more time in their hometown and recorded some of the album in nearby Bethesda. The Rockville LP also finds the group adding a more pop-country feel to their work, as four of the ten tracks were written and produced in Nashville.
These tracks, three of which were co-written and produced by Nathan Chapman—who is best known for his work with Taylor Swift –give the first half of the album a light pop feel. That’s not to say that O.A.R. have eschewed the lilting reggae-inspired beats that are featured in much of their music, on the contrary, the opening track,—and one of the Chapman-produced songs—“Two Hands Up” is a winning combination of reggae, pop, and country.
As the album progresses, the songs extend in length, culminating in the nine minute album closer “I Will Find You,” which prominently features the sax of Jerry DePizzo and of their guest horn players while changing textures from rock to stomping folk to a very early-Chicago-like percussion/vocal jam. The sequencing of The Rockville LP feels very much like the band had two sides of a vinyl LP in mind, with the six three minute songs one one side, and the remaining over four-minute songs on the other.
Roberge, in addition to being a fine pop songwriter, also is adept with the story song. “Caroline the Wrecking Ball” has fine narrative detail, telling the tale of a relationship that begins with the narrator beating up a guy who was attempting to assault a woman nicknamed “Caroline.” The song also features a countryish swing, which is punctuated by an extended DePizzo solo. At times “Caroline the Wrecking Ball” is reminiscent of a more subdued Deacon Blue song.
The Rockville LP is as spirited and worthy addition to O.A.R’s body of work.

A Note About Shipping To The U.S.
We are located in Canada, but have registered ourselves on eBay.com instead of eBay.ca because it gives us significantly better global exposure. The problem with this is that eBay wants us to charge shipping appropriate to US, where media mail and other options make for fairly reasonable delivery costs. We tried it for a while but ended up losing money on shipping or having to cancel the orders because we couldn't afford to ship for those rates. To manage this we have set the US shipping to run a calculator based on an American location (we chose Plattsburgh as fairly close) and charging according to UPS pricing. This avoids the cancellation issue, but appears to the buyer to be a prohibitive shipping cost and misrepresents the shipping as being only expedited. If you give us your postal code we will see if we can offer a more reasonable option, but generally we can get a single LP by air to most places in the continental US for $11, a few bucks less for ground.
