SALSA!: In 1973 the North-American son was renamed "salsa" for a tv special (by Izzy Sanabria of Fania Records, the equivalent of Motown for Latin music). In Puerto Rico salsa is also known as "guaguanco", a term that originally referred to a kind of rumba dance. Larry Harlow's orchestra rediscovered the fusion of charanga violins and conjunto trumpets (with the addition of electric instruments) on his milestone recording Salsa (1974) that included "La Cartera" with vocalist Junior Gonzalez. The 1976 concert "Salsa" organized in New York by the label Fania launched the fad nation-wide. In the 1970s, the main centers for salsa were New York, Miami, and Colombia.

Keyboardist and composer Larry Harlow ("El Judio Maravilloso") was present at the birth of Fania Records, so it seems apt that the label’s revival has breathed new life into his career. At its peak in the mid-1970s, Fania was a global force that turned salsa into an international movement, with a glittering roster of Latin music giants such as Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto, Bobby Valentin, Willie Colón, Hector Lavoe, Johnny Pacheco and Harlow, many of whom also toured with the label’s hugely popular calling card, The Fania All-Stars

"Released not long after his famous tribute to idol Arsenio Rodriguez, pianist Harlow's Salsa was released at a time that proved critical in establishing the Fania Records reputation. Some of my favorite Harlow tunes are on here: from the jovial lament over losing one's wallet on La Cartera, to the more serious lament of No Hay Amigo, tackling the betrayal of friendship. In fact, Harlow's nickname, El Judio Maravilloso (The Marvelous Jew), originated on La Cartera as a bandmember introduces a smokin' Harlow solo, shouting "Ya viene, Larry Harlow: El Judio Maravilloso!" On Wampo, smooth horn-lines recall a ballad in the early morning bar, only to send you home with a descarga hangover on the album closer, Silencio. On top of adding to the Fania sound, Salsa took part in a brief charanga revival before the music would virtually die in the United States. "got to comment this... finally managed to get this remastered CD.
have the original Fania CD release (90's) but for some reason it sounds like the original master has a "tape-stuck-together" syndrome (sticky-shed) in some sections that ruins the musical enjoyment experience. for that reason that CD version stayed stored.

instead, a good friend lent me his pristine LP copy and made a digital recording from it, the one I have been using until now. This recording is very special 'cause it was my first LP (the second one was Hommy). still today, it amazes me. the musical arrangements are out of this world; would love to listen new recordings that can match the musical greatness of songs like "No Quiero" and "Suéltame".

after months looking for it in local stores, i'm ashamed to admit that got to order it from an internet store in the USA. wonder what this ordering managers in local chain stores have in mind when they stock their CD shelves.
the new eMusica remastered version brought a couple of pleasant surprises.

first, the sound quality of this remastering is very good; very close to the original stuff, as I like it. credit goes to the Miami Tape staff.
the second and more pleasant surprise was the author of it's liner notes: Larry Harlow himself. who can do it better than him?
a few unknown details were discovered there. never knewed that Lewis Khan violin incursion was made in the last inning. also wandered about the research process to compile here a nice bunch of Arsenio Rodriguez classics.
even when this album big radio hits were "La Cartera", "El Paso De Encarnación" and "No Hay Amigo". each song were on airplay for a while, something uncommon (WKBM, WKAQ, and WIAC played them like crazy).
something similar happened when Héctor Lavoe released his first solo album a year after.
i'm not known for doing a single CD review (use to do it just in my blog), but this recording deserves it."

Don't assume that our vinyl determination of "Very Good+" is the same as yours!

RECORD OR COVER GRADED VG or LESS WILL BE "SOLD AS IS"

MINT: Unplayed, still sealed.
 

NM RECORDS: are shiny, with no visible defects, they might have one or 2 minor superficial scuff and they should play without any noise. Writing, stickers or other markings cannot appear on the label, nor can any “spindle marks” from someone trying to blindly put the record on the turntable. Major factory defects also must not be present; a record and label obviously pressed off center is not Near Mint. If played, it will do so with no surface noise. (NM records don’t have to be “never played”; a record used on an excellent turntable can remain NM after many plays if the disc is properly cared for.)

NM COVERS:

have no creases, ring wear or seam splits of any kind.

Picture Sleeves: should look as if they never housed a record. This is a great reason to remove your 45s from their picture sleeves and keep them separate. Just keeping the 45 inside the sleeve will cause damage than can reduce the grade of the sleeve.  

VG++ (Excellent) RECORDS: 
Barely noticeable play wear and background noise. May have surface scuffs and/or superficial marks, which will be inaudible or indiscernible from the background, no scratches. Very nice, flaws noted.
VG++ COVERS:
Artwork is still as close to perfect as can be. Some impression to the cover (minor outer ring wear) but no ink wear! Some slight creases to the corners, but not wrinkled and obtrusive to the eye. The corners can show white (where the artwork pasted slick was) meaning, slight wear. No seam splits or writing on the cover or taped repairs can make this grade.  

VG+ RECORDS:

may show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. Minor signs of handling are OK, too, such as telltale marks around the center hole, but repeated playing has not misshapen the hole. There may be some very light ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable.

VG+ COVERS:
should have only minor wear. A VG+ cover might have some very minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom, the most vulnerable location. Also, a VG+ cover may have some defacing, such as a cut-out marking. Covers with cut-out markings can never be considered Near Mint.

VG+ PICTURE SLEEVES:
might show some very light creasing where it is obvious that a record once resided (or still does reside). A VG+ picture sleeve might have some very minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom, the sleeve’s most vulnerable location. 

VG RECORDS:

They have more obvious flaws than their counterparts in better shape. They lack most of the original gloss found on factory-fresh records. Groove wear is evident on sight, as are light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. When played, a VG record has surface noise, and some scratches  may be audible, especially in soft passages and during a song’s intro and ending. But the noise will not overpower the music otherwise. Minor writing, tape, or a sticker can detract from the label. Many collectors who have jukeboxes   will use VG records in them and not think twice. They remain a fine listening experience, just not the same as if it were in better shape.

VG COVERS and PICTURE SLEEVES:
will have many signs of human handling. Ring wear  in the middle or along the edges of the cover where the edge of a record would  reside, is obvious, though not overwhelming. Some more creases might be  visible. Seam splitting will be more obvious; it may appear on all three sides,  though it won’t be obvious upon looking. Someone might have written or stamped  a price tag on it, too.
