Tom Prehns Kvartet had very little output but what is out there is generally highly regarded. This is an incredibly scarce Stereo Jazz masterpiece and one that hardly ever comes to market. I am unsure of the history of this record this is a Stereo copy. It was pressed in incredibly low numbers but I am not sure whether there is a Mono available of this or whether it was just pressed in Stereo. Either way this is incredibly rare. It has only appeared a handful of times, who knows when it will after this.
Condition
Record- On first inspection it looks to have been well looked after, but this record was issued in a plastic sleeve and as such in stronger light there are very fine and light marks throughout the surface, as so often can be the case with this type of inner sleeve. I have scrutinised the surface and I have been unable to find any feelable marks. There are numerous light marks and a couple of more noticeable hairlines but non that can be felt. I have listened to this record from beginning to end and I have not noticed any jumps or skips as a result of these marks. It is rather a heavy pressing so the marks are less noticed on play back. When I was listening there was a underlying surface noise throughout, light hiss and minimal crackle with an occasional pop. This was more noticeable in quieter and more sparse minimal sections but became less apparent in busier loud sections. The sound on the whole translates rather well, it is sharp and dynamic and clean with the aforementioned light surface noise throughout, once it is playing the underlying surface noise dissipates and does not distract from the audio quality to heavily. A professional clean will no doubt benefit this record.
Sleeve. The sleeve was issued in a rather flimsy thin gauge card and as such it has wear in varying degree throughout (as has alway been the case with this record). There has been areas of restoration where places have been neatly restored, there has been some small areas of loss that have been dealt with neatly and effectively. There are some closed tears that have seen some neat attention also with some neat colour matching in places. There are some areas of creasing and wear to the surface both sides. There are numerous surface marks and patches of wear, more noticeable on the back. The lower inner hinge has been replaced which has strengthened the sleeve on the whole. There are some grazes areas, some ring wear, creasing and one small faded pen mark on the front. Despite the wear and restoration this sleeve still presents rather well, it is quite clean and attractive and feels solid as a result of the restoration work. The main wear and work has been carried out on the opening edge front and back, this can been seen when you look at the inside of the sleeve.
