For sale is a 1st edition vinyl release of Reincarnation by Orqhestra Narvaez (Self-released, ARM001).
Orquesta Narvaez, led by the legendary trombone player Dewell Narvaez, was an underground New York salsa band. There was scarcely any sound quite like the awesome trombone sections that denoted this band and identified there's as one of the most unique New York salsa sounds of the 1970s.
Originally from Puerto Rico, Orquesta Narvaez was a band that typified the Salsa sounds of the 70’s in New York City. With an emphasis on heavy trombone lines, their music preceded the term “salsa dura”, which is the description currently used to describe their style of music today. Led by vocalist Armando Vasquez, the band had moderate success with their first and only vinyl recording released on the Tico label in 1975, which is what you are bidding on!
The song “La Mafia” has a sound that is reminiscent of Willie Colon’s legendary style of arrangement and even the lead vocals sound a bit like early Hector LaVoe. But despite the musical similarities they share with Willie and Hector, Orquesta Narvaez showcases a unique sound of their own on several other songs on this timeless album.
Disc is VG+ despite showing noticeable surface wear including some superficial scuffs and a few scratchs, none deep but worth noting. The play is great with side one exhibiting light hiss, noticeable really only during quiet parts. Side two has the same but begins and ends with slightly more, but still not overwhelming simply light crackle. A very playable copy indeed.
Jacket is Poor (let's not try to polish something by calling it "good" when it is this damaged). The jacket is split pretty much everywhere and is being held together by a thread for a few inches along the top left corner and a few more inches near the bottom of the spine. There's water damage along the opening on the front, less so on the back. The imagery is still very much intact and may even be suitable for framing if you don't mind this type of cosmetic damage behind glass.
