redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and rather elusive LP from Colosseum (CRLPX-001, US pressing, red/gold label, mono – no stereo version exists of this performance) features David Oistrakh's earlier account of Khachaturian's Violin Concerto, recorded 16-18 November 1946 with Alexander Gauk conducting the USSR State Symphony Orchestra (and not the composer leading the National Philharmonic Orchestra, as stated on the jacket).
Fine though Oistrakh's later – and much more widely traveled – 1954 EMI recording with the Philharmonia and Khachaturian on the podium is, there is no question that Gauk is the finer conductor, galvanizing an even more brilliant and colorful orchestra accompaniment.
The production standars of these early 1950s Colosseum pressings were quite high and the Oistrakh collector would be remiss not to include a sampling of them in his/her library, particularly as they focused on the violinist's early Soviet mono discography – superb!
There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Jeanne Soudeikine, printed in English only. Also included is a catalog listing of other Colosseum titles with Oistrakh.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. Really, the flaws are quite minor. There is slight edgewear and discoloration, but that is all. There are no seamsplits or owners' markings and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
