Wonderful ultra-rare Canadian radio transcription disc in impossible-to-find perfect unopened condition, with obscure avant garde works for multiple ondes Martenot (the early electronic keyboard instrument from 1928 with a design based on the Theremin, used by Radiohead, Zappa, Varese, Honegger, etc.). The standout track is by the relatively underappreciated INA-GRM product Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux, but each piece is fascinating in its own way, displaying a more contemporary and experimental use of the Martenot than in the typical Messiaen or Milhaud piece from the older generation of Martenot composers. All pieces are performed by L'Ensemble d'ondes de Montreal under the direction of Jean Laurendeau (pupil of Maurice Martenot and Jeanne Loriod) with percussionist Serge Gratton. By the time these pieces were written the Martenot was nearly obsolete, but it experienced a renaissance in French Canada in the 1960s and 70s thanks to the efforts of Laurendeau as well as popular Quebec rock bands Beau Dommage and Harmonium.
Coulombe Saint-Marcoux was a trailblazing Canadian avant garde composer who was among the first women (along with Pauline Oliveros, Bebe Baron, and Pril Smiley) to experiment with electronic music. She was influenced by Iannis Xenakis, who brought her to work at the legendary Groupe de Recherches Musicales (INA-GRM) studios in Paris in 1968. There she studied electroacoustics with musique concrete composers Pierre Schaeffer, Gilbert Amy, Jean-Pierre Guezec, Francois Bayle, Guy Reibel, and Henri Chiarucci. She would go on to form electroacoustic ensembles with Otto Joachim, Gilles Tremblay, and Jacques Lejeune. Coulombe Saint-Marcoux experimented with spatiality and sound trajectory, and incorporated the ondes Martenot early electronic instrument into many of her works. Other composers who have experimented with the Martenot are Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, Jacques Charpentier, Maurice Jarre, Bohuslav Martinu, Pierre Boulez, Charles Koechlin, Giacinto Scelsi, Jacques Ibert, John Donald Robb, Rod McKuen, Karel Goeyvaerts, Toru Takemitsu, Andre Jolivet, Claude Vivier, Marcel Landowski, Jacques Bondon, and Elmer Bernstein. This lp should be heard by anyone interested in early electronic instruments and performers like Oskar Sala and his trautonium, John Eaton and the Syn-Ket, Robert Moog, Donald Buchla/Morton Subotnick, Clara Rockmore, Miklos Rosza, the Ondioline, Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack, Arp, Jean-Jacques Perrey, Gershon Kingsley, John Cage, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Milton Babbitt, Max Matthews, Jean-Claude Risset, Bernard Parmegiani, Herbert Eimert, Robert Beyer, Gottfried Michael Koenig, David Tudor, Hugh Le Caine, Percy Grainger, etc. Check out my other auctions this week for more avant garde/experimental, early electronic/electroacoustic, jazz/improv, psych, sound art, and 20th century classical lps.
