Description
For your consideration is a rare vintage 10 inch 78 rpm by Enrico Caruso entitled Boheme Vecchia Zimarra (The Coat Song). Story goes that either on December 23, 1913, or on January 25, 1916, Andrés de Segurola and Enrico Caruso were performing together in Philadelphia, when Segurola told Caruso he was having voice problems and could not go onto to sing the next song, Boheme Vecchia Zimarra. Caruso told him he could sing the part with his back turned to the audience, even though he was not a basso like Segurola, and all Segurola would have to do was lip sync the part. After the excellent performance, Victor decided to record a reenactment of the event. The original record was only pressed in about 10 copies or so and floated around to different people in Caruso's inner circle or high ups at Victor. The recording eluded collectors for many years and it wasn't until the late 1940s that a surviving copy was acquired by Wally Butterworth, a radio personality and brought to Victor so it could be dubbed and then reissued. Albeit still in relatively small numbers. The other side of this disc features an account of pain's Butterworth went through to track down a copy and also includes an account of the night in Philadelphia by Frances Alda, who was one of the last surviving members of the audiences for the performance. Please keep in mind that rather economical equipment was used and 78s only received a light cleaning. For the highest fidelity reproduction results, a correct sized, well maintained stylus should always be used and antique records should also always receive a deep cleaning with a stiff bristled brush and a non-alcohol based soap. I do not provide grading beyond what is required by eBay.
