Description
Original "Metal Box" (aka Second Edition) by Public Image Ltd (PiL) Limited Edition 3 x 12” Vinyl album 1979
The second album by Public Image Ltd was originally released as "Metal Box" in 1979 by Virgin Records. Contained in a metal 16mm film canister embossed with the band's logo are three black vinyl 12" 45 RPM records. In keeping with the minimalist design, the only other contents of the package are paper inserts between each vinyl disc, plus credits and the track listing printed in red on a thin white sheet of paper.
It was released on November 23, 1979 after an initial pressing of 60,000 units (50,000 UK, 10,000 export), and quickly deleted from the catalog (although the date of its deletion is also documented as November 23, 1979 which seems questionable if not impossible IMHO!). A standard version was then issued on February 22, 1980 as Second Edition, a double LP packaged in a more conventional gatefold sleeve.
Although I am the original owner, the condition of the metal packaging for virtually all the limited edition versions was susceptible to oxidization. This copy is no exception, albeit not showing as much decay as many other copies still available as mine has been in storage for forty years. However, I’ve posted a detail of damage done to the canister during a move. Miraculously, the dent on the back of the canister did not effect the contents inside. In other words, the records were not harmed. The vinyl quality is near mint as the discs have only been played two or three times at most.
