ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and rather rare LP from CBS Masterworks (32 11 0035, US pressing, blue/black label, stereo) features the young Seiji Ozawa leading the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in a glittering and phantasmagoric performance of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14, recorded in the warm acoustics of Massey Hall, Toronto, on 1 December 1966 (producer: Thomas Z. Shepard).
As with all of Ozawa's early recordings - e.g., his Chicago Symphony Orchestra accounts of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade (both on EMI) - there is a highly charged dynamism and potent imagination here that is quite breathtaking. Moreover, the sound is at the same time both detailed and sumptuous - a fantastic album that deserves to be far better known.
Incidentally, the handsome cover portrait of Ozawa was taken by Don Bronstein. There are insightful liner notes, in English only, on the reverse side of the jacket by John Beckwith.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor wear along the bottom edge, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and striking in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring CD silent surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
