Label Conditions: Both have mild and faint toning spots, probably been stored in a cold room at some time. Still attractive and with hardly any spindle marks, this rare album plays with stunning sound.

Cat Number:    V 2036.

Mode / Speed:    Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps:    Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record:  134 grams.  [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy.  Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I  have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity:  Rare and certainly one I have never even seen before. This has to be one of the most obscure albums ever seen on Branson’s early Virgin label.

Brief Info:   One of the more obscure acts to be released in the UK on Virgin, Pekka Pohjola is a Finnish bassist and keyboard player of high repute he formed played with Wigwam. So-much-so, he attracted the attention of Richard Branson who decided to offer him a contract to issue this superb album on his relatively new label. This is superb jazz-rock fusion with distinctly progressive elements. This reminded me of Zappa’s music from the Waka Ja’Waka and Grand Wazoo period and fans of high-octane jazz-prog will love this too. With great sound and production, this has some lovely melodic soloing and this is a band of the highest quality. Certainly a new one on me, this was a real pleasure to listen too and is now my copy to listen too anywhere. A record hardly played, the only blemish are five light clicks near the very start, those apart, flawless sound throughout and this is a supreme Virgin pressing. Clearly this sold in tiny numbers, when was the last time you saw one of these on offer? If, like me, this bypassed you all those years ago, more than worthy of consideration, in fact, this gets my highest possible recommendation. This is a fantastic album.

Cover Grade and Format:  Mint(-) and almost like new, any blemishes are tiny and faint. A single unlaminated format that was printed and made in England by Robor Ltd.

Cover Front:    Superb artwork and looking magnificent. Clean, fresh with any marks or blemishes tiny, few and faint. Barely a crease to be seen bar a tiny cornertip one on the bottom right and no ringwear. This is exceptional I feel.

Cover Back:    A tiny few ultra faint tone traces when viewed closely, but little else to fault and this also looks lovely.

Top Edge: Practically unworn.

Bottom Edge:    As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type:   Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Tiny rub near bottom corner, that apart, almost as new. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn and this is really clean.

Corners:    A couple of tiny tip creases but barely any wear. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary:  A very strong all round example of this elusive 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading:  Grading this one EX+, simply does not do it justice. It has very faint paper scuffs seen under light, unlined inners never help and I truly feel this looks almost as when purchased. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence, any minor surface blemishes have no sound. One tiny mark near the very beginning has five light clicks, the only blemish on this lovely record. Visually a super copy that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading:    Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading:  This Virgin rarity plays above its high visual grading with nothing to fault by those five clicks near the very beginning as mentioned twice already. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is a superb recording and brilliantly produced, if jazz-fusion is your thing, this is unmissable, you will not see this one offered often for sure. Barely any surface sounds and no other pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Minus the five light clicks, this would a nigh-on perfect sounding record. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been little handled. Nothing other than the obvious spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
